Animis opibusque parati: It turns out Alex wasn't as prepared as he thought he was, despite the South Carolina motto. He lured his wife and adult son to their property in the country and shot them to death.

Alex is an example of a red-collar criminal. Meaning he engaged in violence to cover up his financial fraud crimes.

Meet the man who coined the phrase “Red-Collar Crime,” Frank Perri. He's the author of Red Collar White Collar Crime. He's also my guest on Tuesday on A Study in Crime podcast, where he tells me some crazy stories about red-collar criminals. astudyincrime.com

I don't know what it is about “celebrity private investigators,” but they often seem to get into trouble. Consider the cautionary tales of Anthony Pellicano, Vinny Parco, and Chris Butler. Now I present the latest one: Craig Case.

He embezzled $700k from a now-deceased 94-year-old woman who was a patron of the arts. Other charges included forgery, identity theft, money laundering, etc. Sentencing is April 8th. Then Craig heads to the hoosegow.

Santa Barbara Re: People v. Craig Alan Case, 23CR04486 Santa Barbara County District Attorney John T. Savrnoch announced [Thursday] that a Santa Barbara jury found Craig Alan Case, a 76-year-old resident of Santa Barbara, California, guilty of 62 felony counts and 1 misdemeanor count, related to the...

Things I see on surveillance: The other day, I watched a lady spend 37 minutes trying to get a large wicker chair into her SUV. She cut the bottom half off and put that piece in her vehicle. But she couldn’t get the top half in.

She tried everything—putting it in through the passenger door, the back driver’s side door, and the rear liftgate—all to no avail. At one point, I was going to drive over, help her load the thing, and then go back on surveillance. But I'm a professional. I remained on surveillance.

This week, on A Study in Crime (the most stupendous podcast you're not listening to), author and human trafficking expert Matt Friedman called from Hong Kong.

If you think you already know all you need to know about human trafficking—think again. Matt tells some stories and reveals the hard truth about it.

Next week, I speak to Frank Perri for episode 41. The Red Collar Crime League. Frank coined the phrase “Red Collar Crime.” He also has some stories.

But this isn't Earl Hamner Jr. waxing poetically about Depression-era life on Walton’s Mountain. Frank tells stories of embezzlers, conmen, and other fraudsters who resorted to murder to cover up their crimes. Listen and tell your friends about A Study in Crime. astudyincrime.com

Bosch is Amazon Prime’s longest-running original series. The 7 seasons are based on the books by Michael Connelly and feature the exploits of LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch.

Bosch: Legacy is a 3 season sequel of sorts with Harry as a California private investigator. Both series are well-written with superb acting. It's a show worthy of your time.

Everybody counts, or nobody counts.

I was on surveillance the other day in an older part of San Antonio when I passed by the building where my uncle George Cain had his private investigator office.

If you've read my book, Confessions of a Private Eye, you know that my uncle was a PI in the 1980s. When I was 16, he took me on surveillance a couple of times. Those are great memories.

Aside from his office, I also passed by the donut shop where he often met clients (that sounds like a scene from a Kinky Friedman novel). It's a Chinese restaurant now, but my precious memories are still fresh.

A new episode of A Study in Crime is out. Author and Human Trafficking activist Matt Friedman gives the lowdown on the organized international crime of human trafficking. It's all about the money (second only to illegal drugs).

This is my 40th episode. It’s been a lot of work. As Sergeant Major Choozhoo said in Heartbreak Ridge, “An unappreciated field of endeavor”.

Thank you to all who support the show by buying my book, donating, and buying me a Dr Pepper!

You should prepare yourself for scams by text, phone, email, private messenger, social media, and even mail. It will only get worse.

I just received a text letting me know that I have unpaid Texas toll charges. The text encouraged me to click on a link and pay them, and it said that if I didn't, the DMV would be notified. Lions, and Tigers, and Bears, oh my!

Curiously, the Texas Toll Authority texted me from the Philippines. It's a scam. However, on the plus side, they said to have a great day.

When the topic of human trafficking comes up, everyone thinks of trafficking s*x workers, which is true. But that’s only part of it. The food you eat and the clothes you wear may also involve human trafficking.

Join me tomorrow when I speak with human trafficking expert Matt Friedman on A Study in Crime podcast. astudyincrime.com

You can't make this up: Twenty-five years ago, I was trained to conduct national security investigations for the US government in a secret cave. If you've read my book, Confessions of a Private Eye, I talk all about it. Maybe it wasn't a secret, but I still felt like James Bond or The Batman.

Because of that training and my 30 years of practical application, I have wicked awesome interviewing skills.

Do you enjoy food? Ever had a maid? Do you live in a house or apartment or work in an office? Do you wear clothes and use products from factories? Ever stayed in a hotel or eaten in a restaurant? Ever had a mani-pedi? Have you hired a landscaping crew? Been to a carnival or circus? Bought something from a salesperson at your front door? Ever hired a s*x worker?

If so, you've interacted with human trafficking. If you think it’s something that happens “somewhere else,” you’re wrong. It’s organized and part of many industries.

Matt Friedman is CEO of the Mekong Club, an expert in human trafficking, and leads a global initiative to end human trafficking. He’s my guest Tuesday on A Study in Crime. He has stories to tell about human trafficking on a micro and macro level. Don't miss it! astudyincrime.com

Last Tuesday, on A Study in Crime podcast, I spoke with former ATF assistant deputy director and former NYPD homicide detective Peter Forcelli about an organized home invasion robbery crew. Listen to episode 39, "The Robbery Crew of Gotham City."

This Tuesday, in episode 40, “The Problem of Human Trafficking, " I speak with Matt Friedman. Matt’s doing something about it on a global scale, and so can you.

If you think human trafficking is something that happens “over there” in other countries, think again. It’s alive and well in the US. And it's bigger than you think. Tuesday on astudyincrime.com
