MacArthur topped Southside. San Antonio Express-News was there.

I thought we did amazing tonight. We played as a team tonight and I think we did a great job of making the extra pass, and that let a lot of us get some open shots. It was a good team win for us, and it was good to end this part of the season on a good note. Of note: (Boys) Southside's 59-51 win over MacArthur on Friday night ends a streak of 21 district-game losses dating back to February 2, 2023 when the Cardinals topped the Winn Mavericks, 57-56 in overtime.

Valero Alamo Bowl Student-Athlete Scholarships announced!
Below is a list of the recipients who attend schools in our scope of coverage. A comprehensive listing of recipients can be found at:

Alamo Heights High School, Santiago Berenguer – Santiago is a four-year participant on Alamo Heights Varsity Cross Country team and was captain his junior and senior year. He was also on the varsity soccer team for two years, winning the Bi-District Championship and earning All-District honorable mention.

Brackenridge High School, Adalia Duckworth – Adalia is captain of the Brackenridge swim team, where she has earned 2nd team all-district and all-academic awards. She is also captain of the softball team and a member of the National Honor Society.

Brackenridge High School, Joey Garza – Joey is a three-year member of the Brackenridge tennis team where he has served as captain and co-captain. He is also the bass section leader of the school choir and a member in the National Honor Society.

Brackenridge High School, Lawrence Kitt – Lawrence is a four-year track and football player for Brackenridge High School. He is also a trumpet player for the Mariachi team and a participant in the early college program.

Boerne High School, Kinsley Sawyer – Kinsley is a three-sport athlete at Boerne High School, participating on the varsity soccer, volleyball, and track teams. She has earned academic all-district honors and is a nominee for the girls 4-A UIL State All-Tournament team.

Burbank High School, Ryan Vasquez – Ryan is team captain and four-year member of the Burbank High School football team. He is a KENS5 All Star Athlete and also a 2023 district champion. Ryan also participates on the wrestling and track teams at Burbank.

Edison High School, Andrew Rosas – Andrew is a varsity cross country runner and varsity basketball player. He hopes to attend Texas A&M University and study business.

Edison High School, Chipper Mayorga – Chipper is the captain of both the varsity softball and varsity basketball teams and serves as class president. She is the captain of her firefighting class and hopes to work in the fire service and become an Arson Detective.

Fox Tech High School, Miamor Gaitan – Miamor is a four-year letterman with the Fox Tech swim team, a member of the SAISD superintendent advisory council, and president of the Spanish NHS chapter for her campus. She is also an active member of the law program and award-winning mock trial team.

Harlandale High School, Richard Espinoza – Richard is a four-year football and baseball player for Harlandale High School. He also played on the basketball team and is a National Honor Society member.

Highlands High School, Kynze Reinhard – Kynze is Battalion Commander in JROTC and a member of the softball team. She is president of the National Honor Society and hopes to pursue a career in social work.

Jefferson High School, Fabian Hernandez – Fabian is the captain of the boy’s varsity soccer team and competes in varsity football, cross country, and track. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and hopes to become an accountant.

John Jay SEA High School, Patrick Amann – Four-year letterman and captain of the swim and water polo teams, Patrick has earned MVP awards in both sports, is a district and area champion in water polo, and a bronze medal winner in the regional competition for swim. He is a regional grand prize winner for the John Jay Science and Engineering science fair team and leader in the robotics club.

John Jay High School, Alexa Ramos – Alexa is a four-year letterman and captain of the varsity soccer team. Outside of being a member of both the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society, Alexa is a member of AUID, student council and is an all-state award nominee for athletic training.

MacArthur High School, Morgan Gutierrez – Morgan is the varsity volleyball captain, a class officer, and a board member of the Parent Teacher Student Association. An AP Scholar and National Honor Society member, she also serves as a MacTeach student leader.

MacArthur High School, Yamit Saliceti – Yamit is a National Recognition Scholar, National Hispanic Recognition recipient and a member of the National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society. He is also a soccer player, Boys State delegate, MacTeach mentor, and a church multimedia volunteer.

McCollum High School, April Flores – April is a National Honor Society member, class officer, and multi-sport athlete in varsity basketball, varsity volleyball, track, and cross country. She hopes to study criminal justice and become a lawyer.

McCollum High School, Alita Uresti – Alita is a varsity soccer player, active volunteer, class president, and a National Honor Society member. She is planning to study biology with hopes to attend medical school after college.

Sam Houston High School, Jermaine Tibbs – Jermaine is a varsity athlete in football and track and field and an active member of the drama club. He is planning to pursue a degree in computer science with hopes to become an information security analyst.

Sidney Lanier High School, Pu Reh – Pu is a member of the National Honor Society and Academic Decathlon, competing in varsity soccer and tennis. Pu is also active in the National Hispanic Institute, HOSA, and traveled this summer to Japan with the Shirane Foundation.

South San Antonio High School, Elta Hancock – Elta is the head drum major and band president for the marching and concert band. She also serves as National Honor Society historian and is class treasurer in student government.

Southside High School, Juan Palma – Juan is a dedicated member of the marching band and participates in Academic Decathlon. He also competes in various UIL events.

Southwest High School, Mya Luna – Mya is a member of the National Technical Honor Society and National Honor Society, as well as an active participant in FFA. She competes in volleyball and powerlifting and serves on the Student Advisory Committee.

Southwest High School, Jacob Singleton – Jacob competes in track and cross country, participates in HOSA, and holds a CCMA certification. He is an active member of the band, student council, and National Honor Society, as well as the National Technical Honor Society.

Southwest Legacy High School, Ayden Hernandez-Davila – Ayden is the football team captain and a member of Titan Warriors, actively volunteering with the SWISD Punt, Pass, and Kick program. He plans to study mechanical engineering in college.

Veterans Memorial High School, Janelle Scott – Janelle is the captain of the varsity soccer team and an active member of Army JROTC. She is also part of the National Honor Society and plans to join ROTC in college to pursue a career in military service.

Three of the above scholarships are being given in honor of significant Valero Alamo Bowl contributors.

Jermaine Tibbs from Sam Houston High School is this year’s Bob Brincat Scholarship Award Winner. This scholarship is annually given in honor of 2008 Valero Alamo Bowl Chairman, Bob Brincat, a tireless advocate for the Bowl’s scholarship program who passed away after a courageous fight against lymphoma.

For its 32nd annual game, the Valero Alamo Bowl will award $1,237,500 million split between 168 San Antonio high school and college students via two programs. This amount is expected to be the largest local scholarship total in Valero Alamo Bowl history and #1 in local giving among all bowl games. O...
