Just days after graduating from Mountain Ridge High School with honors, 18-year-old Haven McBride was fatally shot in his home on June 17 in what police describe as a negligent act involving a firearm.

Authorities say Haven’s stepfather, Joseph Lee—a former Green Beret—was attempting to demonstrate gun safety to his young daughter when the firearm discharged, striking Haven in the head. He died at the scene. Lee told police he believed the gun was unloaded.

Lee has since been arrested and charged with manslaughter. Investigators and experts have called the act reckless, especially given Lee’s military background.
