Can Music change the world?
"There are two kinds of music, divine and earthly music. Divine music exhilarates the spirit, while earthly music has an effect upon the body. Divine music belongs to the Kingdom of God, earthly music is of the mundane world. I hope you will be confirmed to study both kinds of music so that you may be able to sing the anthems of heaven and the songs of this world.
-Κ»Abdu'l-BahΓ‘ [1844-1921]
"... Music has changed with time, and in turn, it has had a considerable impact on world events and our society at large. Itβs even more interesting that every single age of music can be associated with some sort of purpose or message. Ludwig van Beethoven once said that music can change the world, and honestly, he is right. The number of things that have happened because of music...itβs simply unimaginable β a case in point being the Free Mandela concerts held in 1988. Millions of people around the world abhorred the decision made by the South African government to keep Nelson Mandela behind bars. A concert was held by a few activists in an attempt to help free him. By a few activists, I mean 600 million people! The audience also included celebrities, who flocked from all around the world to rally support for the man whoβs considered to be the βGandhi of South Africaβ."
- Euan Clague, Young Times
"... The artistic expression called music could be very loud sometimes. Because of this, it can attract attention easily, influence opinions, and shape ideologies. Most importantly, music can heal, break down barriers, reconcile, educate, assist the needy, galvanize support for good causes, and even promote the protection of human rights. Music has the undisputed capacity to make the world a better place".
