Yogananda Pittman becomes the first Black & first woman to head the USCP

The US Capitol Police have appointed Yogananda Pittman as the department's acting chief following the resignation of its former chief, Steven Sund. He resigned after the riots incited by President Donald Trump at the Capitol in Washington, DC on January 6, 2021. Pittman was designated as acting chief on January 8, 2021.
A native of Cambridge, MD, she joined the department in 2001 and had rose to the rank of assistant chief. Pittman is now the first woman and first Black person to head the organization, according to the US Capitol Police (USCP).

Pittman takes over a Capitol Police force that is facing mounting scrutiny for its handling of the security of the US Capitol, as a mob breached the complex while lawmakers were in session occupied with the business of certifying the Electoral College results to affirm Joe Biden as the next US president. The USCP has also faced racism charges. She will lead them through investigations.

Pittman has built a distinguished career with the USCP. She was one of the first Black female supervisors to rise to the rank of captain in 2012. In that role she oversaw more than 400 officers and civilians and was an integral part of the security planning for President Barack Obama's second inauguration the following year.

In 2018 she was promoted to deputy chief and became bureau commander for the Command and Coordination Bureau.
Last October, Pittman was recognized as the 2020 recipient of the Women in Federal Law Enforcement's Outstanding Advocate for Women in Federal Law Enforcement award.

A graduate of Morgan State University, Pittman earned a master's degree from Marist College in public administration and is currently working on her doctorate in public administration.
