The Teller County Sheriff’s Office announced that the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine near Cripple Creek will resume operations for the 2025 tourist season. This follows the conclusion of an investigation into a deadly elevator malfunction that killed a tour guide and trapped nearly two dozen tourists.

The investigation determined the incident was caused by operator error, not by faulty equipment or current mine practices. The case has been ruled an accidental death.

Mary Agnes Pacheco Andersen passed away on November 25,2024 in Colorado Springs. She was the only daughter born to Robert C Pacheco and Adalida Krummeck on July 25,1935 in Salida Colorado. She was the sister of Robert W Pacheco. She graduated from Salida High School in 1954. She married her high school sweetheart Dennis DuWayne (Denny) Graf in 1955. They had two children Leonard (Lee) born in 1957 and Bernard (Bo) born in 1963. The couple divorced in 1966 and she returned to Salida with her two sons. She worked for Doctors Leonardi, Mehos and Sandell for 15 years. Her sons both graduated from Salida High School. She moved to Canon City in 1982 with her second husband, Matt Neises. She retired from West Central Mental Health in 1999. In 1998 she married Raymond K Andersen. The new blended family was quite large and consisted of 3 children, 7 grand children and 6 great grandchildren. Ray and Mary loved to entertain at their home, traveling, family gatherings and quiet times together.

SALIDA, Colo.— Brance Alden Simpson was born at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center’sFamily Birthing Center in Salida on January 13, 2025 at 3:48 p.m. He weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces,and measured 21 inches long.Brance’s parents are Baileigh and Brandan Simpson of Cotopaxi. Grandparents are Kim and Happy Simpson of Bloomfield, NM and Rene Tarleton and Chris Soiles of Belen, NM. Great-grandparents are Harry and Paula Stahl of Luna, NM.

Buena Vista, CO – On Tuesday, January 14th, the Chaffee County Women Who Care (CCWWC) came together to hear presentations from three local nonprofits, each sharing their vision for utilizing a $15,400 award. In the end, Full Circle Restorative Justice (FCRJ) won the hearts and minds of the group, and will use the funding to support their Restorative Justice Diversion Program.

During the meeting, the three presenting organizations, GARNA, Full Circle Restorative Justice, and the Alpine Achievers Initiative, described their organizations, programs and services, as well as how they serve the residents of Chaffee County. Each presenter then answered questions from the audience, most of which pertained to their organizational structure and funding streams. Once each nonprofit gave a pitch, the CCWWC members voted.

“It was an amazing evening with the inspiring women of Chaffee County Women Who Care,” said Sandy Visnack, a member of the CCWWC Steering Committee.

Four-year-olds planning to enter kindergarten, as well as some three-year-olds, are eligible for subsidized preschool.
