Conference Info, Updates, Great Weather Week

Linda Gettmann

Jun 8

It’s looking fabulous for conference week in Bend, mid-70’s-low 80 temps all week. Bring a jacket or sweater for cool mornings and the outside dye workshops.

We have a couple seats available in the vans for the Crescent Moon Alpaca Ranch visit on Wednesday afternoon – 1:00-3:00 PM. Transportation fee is $15 per person; please bring cash in exact change. It will be collected as you board the van in front of the Riverhouse Convention Center entrance.

For Guild Booth and Vendor Booth set up beginning Wednesday around Noon, Charlene will have “road monitors” at the north end of the Convention Center to direct traffic down to the lower level exhibit hall for unloading. We ask that you follow these directions; it is a steep downhill lane and there is not a lot of room once you get there with the deck posts in place along the entire east side of the building. We have volunteer help for unloading your cars into the building and then ask that you drive up the lane and park either in the Convention Center parking lot above the south end of the building, or across the street in the Riverhouse hotel parking lots.

Fashion Show tickets are available at the Registration Desk starting June 11 for $25 cash only. This ticket is limited to the fashion show only. The reception begins at 6 PM and the Fashion Show at 7:30, so purchasers of these tickets will be admitted immediately following the reception, so entry time is approximately 7:15-7:30pm. Tickets for the reception are no longer available.

Keynote address tickets are also available for $25 during conference week.

Virtual Seminar ZOOM Participants: By Wednesday, June 14, individuals who are participating remotely via Zoom (i.e., you are not at the Convention Center in Bend) will receive an email with links to the Zoom seminars purchased. If you don't see them in your email, please check your spam or junk file. If you have not received them by noon on Thursday, June 15, contact Sue Walsh, [email protected] . Please note that each seminar has a different link, so be sure to use the correct one if you have signed up for multiple Zoom seminars with our virtual presenters.

Each seminar will be introduced by a seminar assistant in the conference room in Bend, where those in the virtual version will participate. Virtual participants will be able to ask questions live; there will be a wireless microphone for them. Zoom participants will be put on mute but will be able to ask questions through the chat feature, monitored by the assistant. Please note that we will do our best to make sure all questions are addressed during the allotted time.

If you have entered items in the Open Show, and did not mail them to Anne Kramer, please bring them to the Deschutes South room in the hotel main lobby building during the day on Wednesday. Anne will be there all day.

Workshop and Seminar Class Assistants

After you have checked in at Registration and picked up your conference packet, please head over to the Info Table and check in there as well to confirm your Class Assistant assignment. We will answer any additional questions you may have about your duties. Thank you for being willing to help out your instructor and fellow participants!

MAPS of the Riverhouse Hotel and Convention Center are available online. You may want to print these or download to your device.

Workshop classrooms are available Sunday, June 11 from Noon-8 PM for students to set up looms. Monday and Tuesday the rooms are open from 7:30 AM – 6 PM. Wednesday – Saturday the rooms are open from 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM. They will be locked up after the last student and teacher leave.

We look forward to seeing you all next week.

Thanks again to everyone who signed up for a shift or two. It definitely takes a village to put on a conference!

A: Each workshop and seminar description on the website lists the materials and equipment items that students need to bring, as well as the materials fee and details. Students in on-loom weaving classes have already been notified of warping instructions. If you have not received warping information from the instructor, please email Ginger Kaldenbach, Education Co-chair.

Registration closed May 22nd and all instructors now have complete lists of students. Instructors with additional instructions will be emailing students by June 3rd. Please let the instructor know that you’ve received their emails.

The Element Hotel classroom will open at 8:30 AM each day and locked at 5 PM, Monday-Thursday with Linda Kubik’s workshops. The address is 1526 NW Wall Street, Bend. This hotel is approx. 1.3 miles south of the Riverhouse complex, and 4 blocks north of the core area of downtown Bend. This hotel does not have a restaurant on site, but snacks and drinks are available for purchase in the lobby. There are no hotel shuttles and students are responsible for their own transportation. See if you and your classmates can carpool.

Fashion Show entries are to be brought to Karen Sieradski’s room at the Riverhouse. Those entering garments in the show will receive an email message with her room number on Sunday, June 11. Meals during Conference Week are on your own. The Riverhouse has a large, nice restaurant, Currents, with inside and outside seating on the deck next to the Deschutes River. They also have a separate bar area. Reservations are necessary at all restaurants in Bend for dinner during the summer. Breakfast and lunches can usually be drop in but inquire at the restaurant if they take reservations for those meals as well. We are going to talk to the managers at nearby restaurants next week and let them know that we will have 400-500 Conference attendees in town for the week and they should expect to be busy. We will also see if any of them can or will have quick to-go food available; salads, sandwiches, etc. and we will let you know in the next blog post, June 8. Blogs will be posted Monday, June 12 at 7 AM, and daily thereafter through Saturday, June 17. We have met with and emphasized the full restaurant scenario to all the Riverhouse management team this past week. Lunch breaks are 1.5 hours Monday-Thursday and 1 hour Friday and Saturday. There is a WinCo grocery store about a ½ mile north of the Riverhouse complex. Review the Conference Week Schedule for times and locations of all events; we’ll see you soon, safe travels.

Take Advantage of all the Conference has to Offer

Many fun and exciting events and activities are happening at the Conference:

You will find demonstrations, door prizes, exhibits, and places to sit and chat with friends to spin, weave, and knit. There will be a reception for the Johansen Tapestry exhibit at the Central Oregon Community College Barber Library on Monday, June 12, 5:30-7:30 PM. Vans will be making round trips between the Riverhouse Convention Center and COCC during this time at no charge to you. Meetings of groups such as Complex Weavers, the ANWG Annual Membership Meeting, HGA Certificate of Excellence, Jane Stafford’s School of Weaving, and the ANWG History and Tapestry Study Groups are happening on Friday and Saturday. The towel exchange is proving to be very popular as is the Noh coat parade at the end of the must-see Fashion Show on Saturday evening.

A special event after the banquet on Friday is our Keynote Speaker, Jeanne Carver of Shaniko Wool Company, Maupin, Oregon. If you have a Conference Package and won't be using your admission to an evening event, let us know by updating your registration form or sending an email to the registrar.

Any registrant can go back into the registration system at any time to modify personal information, including volunteer and demonstration preferences, whether you plan to make a Noh coat (and if it's finished), or any other additions or changes.

Don't hesitate to send questions or requests to the registrar at [email protected]. She signed up for this and is happy to help. Really!

Workshop Highlight

Are you a ply-split braider? You might want to take advantage of Barbara Walkers’ 1-day workshop on Thursday, Ply-splitting from Drawdowns. Barbara has written a book on this subject. She has also won numerous awards for her ply-splitting pieces.

In this workshop you will learn how to interpret weave structures in ply-splitting by using the drawdown portion of a weaving draft. Students need experience in ply-splitting and to know the difference between a quarter twist and a half twist, and the POT and SCOT structures. Don’t miss this opportunity to advance your ply-splitting skills.

Seminar Highlight

Are you interested in Rigid Heddle weaving but are not familiar with looms? Patty Huffer’s Friday morning seminar, What Rigid Heddle Loom is Best For Me? will have a variety of rigid heddle looms on hand and discuss the pros and cons of each loom. Looms will be available for students to try a test run.

Show Entry Update: The fashion show entry deadline has been extended to May 1. Take this opportunity to enter your fiber art into one of the conference shows.

We are looking forward to hosting all of you at the 2023 ANWG Conference. Take advantage of these wonderful educational opportunities right here in Central Oregon. Grab your friends and sign up for a workshop and seminars, participate in the shows and exhibits, and experience the camaraderie of a fiber arts conference June 12-17 in Bend, Oregon. Mar 10

The last day to register for a Conference Package is Sunday, March 19. The Package includes three seminars, a conference bag, woven nametag, and the three evening events for $395. This is a $70 savings over a la carte pricing for the same seminars and events. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to make the most out of your conference experience this June.

If you have registered for a Conference Package, make sure that you signed up for the seminars you want. Some people were surprised to find they had not registered for seminars when they thought they had. There are also people who signed up for fewer than the three seminars included in the Conference Package. Being on a wait list for a seminar does not count toward the limit of three. Let Janis Johnson the Conference Registrar know if you have questions or need help, by sending an email to [email protected].

The Registration system will not be available from Monday, March 20 through Sunday, March 26. Registration will open again at 7:00 AM PDT on Monday, March 27 with a la carte sales for seminars, the Shopping Extravaganza and Reception, the Banquet and Keynote Address, and Saturday’s Reception and Fashion Show, plus all available workshops and meetings.

Lodging Availability

An update on the rooms available at the conference hotels:

Riverhouse has more than 15 rooms available at conference rates from Sun-Tues. June 11-13. Three rooms available on Wed. 6-14; 0 rooms on Thurs. 6-15; 1 room on Friday 6-16; and more than 15 available on Saturday, June 17. The room block rates are more than $100 per night less than the current room rates. We will not be able to get any additional rooms added to our block at these lower prices.

Red Lion has 24 double queen rooms available at $209/night. This hotel is right across the street from the Convention Center and a good option.

The Element Hotel has 17 rooms available, and the rooms include a cook-to-order breakfast and happy hour with food daily. Please contact these hotels directly to check on availability for your length of stay. The phone numbers and links can be found under the “Places” tab at the top of each webpage.

Bend has over 25,000 hotel rooms, so if you are looking for other accommodations, you can certainly find it with a quick internet search.

Available Workshop Highlights

We still have seats available in these two fantastic workshops: Diane Totten’s Crimp and Create and Susan Wilson’s Polychrome Crackle. Diane has been experimenting and weaving crimp fabric, making clothing, and teaching this technique to students for many years. She has produced DVD’s and articles in major fiber arts magazines as well as teaching at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. Take this opportunity to learn a unique weaving technique from Diane right here in the Pacific Northwest.

Polychrome Crackle with Susan Wilson features amazing ways to design drafts and create color interaction in a block weave on only 4 shafts. Susan has written a book, Weave Classic Crackle & More, as well as many articles for fiber arts magazines. She has a Certificate of Excellence in Weaving at the Master level in the crackle weave structure. You won’t find a better opportunity to learn a weave structure from a master weaver like Susan.

Available Seminar Highlights

Two interesting seminars have seats available: Thimbleberry Felt Designs with Tylar Merrill and Color Theory from the Fringe with Michele Belson. Tylar has explored felt design for many years and has developed different techniques and processes to achieve her wonderful garment creations. You will want to explore felt designing with Tylar in this Friday afternoon seminar.

Michele has been teaching color theory, weaving, and pattern drafting for many years now all over the US as co-owner of Lunatic Fringe Yarns. This seminar explores hue, value, and color contrasts using a variety of tools to help your work reflect your personal color vision. Sign up for this seminar on Saturday afternoon.

Students will be contacted by Instructors in mid-April with any special instructions for workshops and seminars. Should you need to contact the instructor before this, please email the Education Co-chair, Ginger Kaldenbach [email protected], and include the session name and your question.

We are looking forward to hosting all of you at the 2023 ANWG Conference. Take advantage of these wonderful educational opportunities here in Central Oregon. Grab your friends and sign up for a workshop and seminars, participate in the shows and exhibits, and experience the camaraderie of a fiber arts conference June 12-17 in Bend, Oregon. Registration will open again on Wed. Feb. 15 at 7 AM, PST. We apologize for any inconvenience with our unexpected difficulties in the credit card processing system. We have worked diligently to correct the issues and will be able to reopen tomorrow.

A new feature in the workshop and seminar listings will be a notice “only 5 (4,3,2) seats left” to let you know that the class is almost full. We do have some workshops and seminars that are full, but there are still lots of seats left in most subject categories. We did contact the instructors and ask about increasing their maximums and were able to add more seats in the most popular classes. We appreciate our instructors being willing to add students where the facilities allowed.

A la Carte Registration Date Moved Up to March 27 from April 11. You will be able to purchase individual seminars, evening event tickets, and all remaining workshop seats beginning Monday, March 27, 7 AM. The Conference Package option will no longer be available for sale after March 19. The Package pricing at $395 is a $70 discount over the individual ticket prices for 3 seminars and the 3 evening events at $465. The registration system no longer has the ability to save partial registrations. We recommend entering all of the required personal information and saving that by registering, and then return to the system to make your selections and pay for them.

Breaking News section on the top of the home page at https://anwgconference2023.com
