ANIMAL WATCH INDY Dec. 29, 2024. A big thanks for a wonderful holiday romp of a different kind recently. Alpacas from a farm near Portland welcomed visitors, then went for a run. Graceful animals with seemingly very cheery dispositions...

ANIMAL WATCH INDY Sept. 15, 2024. Water is a serene setting for a mental unwind, but even the most stunning stream or prettiest pond is made more sublime by the way waterfowl use it--gliding and dipping, dunking and and diving. And communicating in short guttural noises that sound like constant comments.

ANIMAL WATCH INDY July 28, 2024. Street smarts! It's a common sight in communities to see these water birds making good use of the nearest gutter after a rain. This pair of mallards appears to be quite comfortable strolling a local street.

ANIMAL WATCH INDY July 21, 2024. A local aquatic community housed in an aquarium is dodging and circling to catch some recently deposited food in the tank. Competing for blood worms and fish flakes, the faster swimmers seem to have a clear advantage in this confined environment.

ANIMAL WATCH INDY June 30, 2024. A sign that spring is over: a tiny baby bunny in the neighborhood looks just about ready to leave mom -- but not quite yet.

ANIMAL WATCH in INDY June 23, 2024. This may be something you don't often see -- a bird attack. This Brewer's Blackbird kept swooping down on the individual attempting to video the flyer. The action speaks for itself ...

ANIMAL WATCH INDY June 9, 2024. Oregon is known as the Beaver State, of course, but 220 years ago Lewis & Clark were well on their way to Oregon and, during the trip -- called the "Corps of Discovery" -- they came upon an exotic-looking animal they identified as a "Gazella." It was the pronghorn antelope, still flourishing in the eastern part of the state. (Photo credit: ODFW)

ANIMAL WATCH INDY June 2, 2024. A flock of American Coots glides with grace across water at Ankeny refuge. These birds have a unique communication style, one unlike many other water fowl. Coots vocalize with different sounds, ranging from grunting to clucking, bleating to squawking. To the careful listener it sometimes sounds like a special conversational code.

ANIMAL WATCH INDY May 26, 2024. In a local yard, romping freely, two rabbits that look like they may be escapees from a household hutch suddenly hear a dog's bark. Though distant, they seem to know just what to do: RUN!

ANIMAL WATCH INDY May 19, 2024. It's clover time. The springtime sprouting of clover means the arrival of rabbits in these patches, too--they love munching the globe-shaped flowers. In fact, Clover is the name of a popular bunny character of today's children's books and movies. In the photo, there are two rabbits, but one is more camera-shy ... or perhaps just more intensely interested in the good-tasting vegetation.

ANIMAL WATCH INDY May 5, 2024. Independence, Ore. A trip to Newport means one thing for sure: an adventure at the aquarium. Here are two sea lions that look like they have taken flight, as they use their fore-flippers to glide through the water. The 90-minute driving time to this spot is more than worth it, with a lot to see underwater without ever getting wet (except in the rain, of course.)

INDY ANIMAL WATCH Independence, Ore. April 28, 2024. Yards in the Mid-Willamette can be home-sweet-home to a wide variety of sparrows, like this one. But unlike robins, which come in only a handful of different types, sparrows are diverse--with more than 25 different kinds. Adding to the confusion: Males and females often have different markings. What kind of sparrow is this? Even google-image identifier couldn't give a definite answer...

INDY ANIMAL WATCH Independence, Ore. March 21, 2024. Cluck-cluck and look at this. That is what this hen seemed to be saying as she laid yet another egg in a back yard recently. Still warm, the egg was harvested immediately. Home-produced eggs in town have grown as quickly in popularity as Deodar cedars, the fast-growing hedges used to create natural barriers in yards. Which leads to the question: Which came first: The chicken or the cedar?

ANIMAL WATCH INDY April 14, 2024. Look who's looking around the Salem Capitol grounds. Actually, this photo was taken around the time the short legislative session ended. The bird seemed very familiar with the place, trotting by one building and seeming to look in a window. Actually, there seemed to be quite a few turkeys wandering that day, leading one observer to suggest they may live there.

ANIMAL WATCH INDY April 7, 2024. Recently, as if on cue, a lone rabbit hopped into a yard, and posed for this photo. Spring has made an entrance, if an old poem about its arrival is a true indication. The little rhyme goes: "Spring is here, the grass is riz, I wonder where the bunnies is?" Well, it seems they're here now, too, out in the grass, heralding the season.

ANIMAL WATCH INDY Sunday, March 24, 2024. This pair of dark-eyed juncos show why these birds are a backyard favorite. Colorful and inquisitive, they're also entertaining for their interactions with each other, which involve a lot of head movement. Look for them wherever you go in the Mid-Willamette Valley--they like it here. Thank you to Billy W for the photo.

ANIMAL WATCH Independence, March 10, 2024. Up close and curious, a house finch takes advantage of a bird feeder near Ash Creek in Independence. The colorfulness of the male bird--red, eye-catching blotches--is a standard give-away. On winter days, these flyers put color in the air and wherever they land. Thanks to an Indy resident for providing the photo.
