Did you know that today is World Radio Day? Now that you know, you might be asking yourself why? Why does it fall on International Pancake Day, National Cheddar Day, and Galentine's Day? Well, today was formed to celebrate the importance of radio and what it brings to people all over the world. As stated by UNESCO:

The ongoing utilitarian value of Radio as a relatively free and portable public safety net during emergencies and power outages brought on by natural and human-made disasters such as storms, earthquakes, floods, heat, wildfires, accidents and warfare.

The continuing democratic value of Radio to serve as a grassroots catalyst for connectedness within underserved groups including immigrant, religious, minority and poverty-stricken populations; and as an instantaneous bellwether of public opinion expressed through the auspices of free speech in the public space.

It is a remarkable achievement for a major mass communications medium to continue its relevancy past 100 years and still be a force for freedom of expression, joy and knowledge.

🙌 The new antenna has been mounted, the feedline connected, and the initial nitrogen pressurization completed. The tower climbers had a difficult time with it this week due the original installation mount and clearance issues. That combined with weather and illness delays have set things back. Specifically there was a problem in the deicer wiring and they ran out of daylight to solve the deicer. They will be returning the week of the 27th to finish the deicer, dress the air/electrical conduit, and remove the temporary antenna. That will complete our tower climbing needs.
The new antenna has tested very very well and did not require any slug tuning. as shown in the plots images below.

It is ready for full power broadcast and we will switch over to it tomorrow after we check the nitrogen system for slow leaks.

🙌 Good news! We have limited reception (which is better than static!).

"It was a long day at Prospect hill yesterday. The fog or should I say clouds, didn't lift until just before sunset and that decreased visibility for the tower climbing crew.
The crew needed to straighten a crooked standoff on the tower that the new antenna will mount to. That was a slow process and took most of the morning. The result of this effort will be improved fringe reception to the south and stability for the mounting.

The first antenna bay went up in the afternoon. Around mid afternoon we realized that the weather for Saturday would not permit a climb due to very strong south winds and rain. In an effort to not leave us off the air for a few days, Michael and Eric devised a temporary single bay antenna that mounted to the NW leg of the tower about 60 feet AGL.

Thanks to these efforts we are on the air at 950 watts. The other upshot of this temporary antenna, besides buying us time to ride out the weather, is that it can be left on while we do the other work with the exception of when climbers climb past it on their way up to our main antenna. So we will be on the air this week at about 45% power with occasional, brief interruptions until we can switch to the new antenna."

It was a productive day yesterday. The old antenna and voltage divider was removed and safely returned to the ground. The Climbers are back at the hill at today to bring up the first antenna bay of the new antenna.

The first picture shows the difference between the old antenna on the right and the new one on the left. You will notice how much bigger and sturdier the pipes fittings and welds are on this design. It is going to be more resilient to damage from falling ice and fittings. It is a very well designed, assembled and packaged antenna.

Then there is a picture of a tower climber starting to remove the old antenna and finally one more picture after removing most of the antenna.

Sorry for the static....Tower climbers are ready to start this project today. We should be back on air by Saturday.
