A Ushabti (Egyptian: wšbtj or šwbtj) was a funerary figure in the form of the likeness of the deceased, and was engraved with spells and incantations or, most commonly, a verse from the Book of the Dead (Chapter 6 most prevalent).

The reason for the Ushabti’s creation was to help provide the deceased with spiritual welfare, and help with activities and chores the deceased may have to partake in during their journey to the Afterlife, and while inhabiting the Afterlife. The Ushabti became a traditional funerary item during the Old Kingdom.

Roman Diatretic Glass Vase (4th Century AD), from Autun, France.

The exceptionally rare diatretic glass vase was discovered in a paleo-Christian necropolis in Autun, central France. The fragments of the vase were inside a massive sandstone sarcophagus, one of six found in the necropolis, at the feet of the deceased individual. The necropolis was in use between the early 3rd and the middle of the 5th Century AD, and the glass vase dates to the 4th Century AD.

It is made of a reticulated glassware, an elaborate ornamental style featuring interlacing lines of glass in relief. Just 4.7 inches high and 6.3 inches in diameter, the vase is one of only 10 complete examples of Roman reticulated glass known to survive.

Relief of Sobek

Detail of a bas relief depicting the crocodile headed god Sobek at Temple of Kom Ombo. One of the most prominent deities associated with crocodiles was Sobek, he was worshipped as a protective deity, particularly in areas where crocodiles were prevalent.

During the Ptolemaic Period in ancient Egypt, the worship of Sobek continued, although there were some changes in religious practices and beliefs. The Ptolemaic Dynasty, which ruled Egypt from 305 BC to 30 BC, was of Greek Macedonian origin and brought their own religious traditions and deities to Egypt. However, they also adopted and incorporated many aspects of Egyptian religion, including the worship of Sobek.

Crocodiles held significant cultural and religious importance in ancient Egypt. They were associated with the Nile River, which was a vital source of life and fertility for the Egyptians. Crocodiles were seen as powerful and dangerous creatures, and their behavior and characteristics were often attributed to various deities.

Ring Inscribed with Hieroglyphs

Upon death, people who were thought to have lived moral lives were reborn in the afterlife as a form of the god Osiris. This ring is inscribed with the title “Osiris,” followed by the owner’s names and titles, attesting to his faith that he would become one with the god after death.

The inscriptions on gold rings could represent personal names, titles, religious symbols, or even protective spells. They were often used as amulets or talismans, believed to bring good luck, protection, or serve as a form of identification.

Probably Ptolemaic Period, ca. 305-30 BC. Now in the Art Institute of Chicago. 1894.265

Silver Coffin of King Psusennes I :

King Psusennes ruled during 3rd Intermediate Period (21st Dynasty), 1047-1001 BC, from Tanis. His stunning sarcophagus was discovered by French archaeologist named Pierre Montet just before outbreak of WWII and unfortunately went quite unnoticed amidst chaos. But discovery can be valued as important as finding tomb of King Tutankhamun.

In ancient Egyptian culture, gold was considered flesh of gods, while silver was believed to be their bones. Although gold was more abundant in ancient Egypt, silver was even more valuable as it had to be imported from Western Asia and Mediterranean.
