The daily newspaper - a living textbook

The Pulitzer Prize-winning Tampa Bay Times is the largest daily newspaper in Florida. The Newspaper in Education (NIE) is a cooperative effort between school districts and the Times to encourage the use of newspapers as an educational resource – a living textbook. The newspaper provides teachers with contemporary informational texts that engage students and relate academic learning to real-world experiences. Research shows that students who learn using the newspaper as an educational resource score more highly on standardized tests and are more likely to become lifelong readers and engaged citizens.
