About Music Tampa Bay
Music Tampa Bay, Inc was formally issued a license by the Federal Communications Commission to operate a low power broadcast station at 96.7 FM in October, 2016. This followed construction of an antenna and transmitter facility in the downtown area of St Petersburg producing a signal reaching out about 3 or 4 miles in every direction. Unknown at the time of the license application however were plans by iHeart Radio, known then as Clear Channel Broad-casting, to establish programming from Tampa AM station WFLA on the same FM frequency from a tower in southern Pasco County covering most of the Tampa Bay region. Those operations began nearly a full year after the FCC permit was issued to begin construction of the new Music Tampa Bay FM station, and have resulted in significant interference beyond the immediate downtown and surrounding areas. It may be possible to relieve some of this interference in the future as revenues become available to permit further engineering studies and modifications.
96.7 FM programming is based on an all-original-music-by-local-artists concept begun in an internet streaming format created in 2005, and which continues to operate now through this website and a variety of other on-line listening platforms in tandem with the new FM station. Music streaming formally began using simple programming software. More sophisticated music rotation tools were installed and adopted for play-list operations beginning in late 2007. This improvement made it possible to greatly expand and diversify the song selection process. The next year program operations were moved to remote server facilities in what is now generally referred to as "the cloud". Live streaming events also began in late 2009 at an event at Pro Star Studios in St Pete. Another event was heard in this fashion a year later from Skipper's Smokehouse in Tampa, followed a year after that by a live show from a Bands on the Sand event on Treasure Island. Live programming in both the internet stream and on the new FM is now possible with new broadcast and internet studios completed in the summer of 2017 at The Zoo Studios and Event Space, a state of the art video production facility at 1741 1st Avenue North in St Pete.
