AFRICANIZED BEES!! One question we get often is about “Africanized Bees”! This here is a perfect example of what that can look like! While many feral bees in our area have the genetics from the Africanized bees, over the years that hot temper has been watered down with the genetics of gentle tempered bees often kept by beekeepers. However as you can see there was no watering down with these ladies! Bees like this can be a scary experience for even a seasoned beekeeper, which is why we don’t recommend just anyone take on a bee removal, or the DIY version of a home extermination when it comes to bees. They are unlike other critters and definitely deserve a sense of knowledge a respect when handling them! Just look at that little tongue (proboscis) lapping up that honey. The proboscis is another name for the tongue of a bee, it is much like the tongue of a human in the sense that it is soft and can be extended.The sweetest thing is to watch them clean and groom one another much like our beloved dogs and cats. The more you watch these magnificent creatures the more they become a less scary thought for some and more of a beautiful part of our world. Shed floors are always a favorite of ours because we pretty much know the basics of what to expect but it’s also a very big surprise when we open up the floor to see what’s inside! wow this colony of bees was one of our smaller colonies that we have removed from a shed floor they were incredibly gentle, and it always makes it so much easier for us to work with them. When the wind blows a tree over and reveals a surprise inside! We get lots of calls after storms when people discover bees living inside of a tree in their yard after limbs have broken and or trees have toppled over. This one was particularly important to get relocated in a timely manner since the tree had fallen into the yard of the neighbor! These bees set up shop in an old garbage can used for firewood! What we thought was just a small cluster turned out to be a crazy maze of honeycomb built all through the wood and Sphagnum moss!
