I'm sure they weren't all angels, but inmates at the local Danli prison (as opposed to the infamous national prison up the road) were very appreciative of the eyeglasses & good pressure checks brought by Idaho student nurses. Eye-opening experience.

Busy, hot day in Danli. But ISLA nurse Kathy Furey helped bring another life into world with help from two Idaho student nurses. The others were taking their show on the road to a cigar-making factory, the local bus station and door- to-door.

All work and no play makes for dull nurses & students. So today was the day for adventure, especially after the bus got stuck on local Danli, Honduras mountain road. But no one was deterred from a rugged hike that ended in fun at a waterfall, followed by Zipline and other fun!

Another full day for the Idaho nursing students, doing blood pressure checks, giving out eyeglasses and toothbrushes at a community health fair in Danli center. Honduran nursing students were celebrating the history of their profession also. Time afterwards for some fun in including a soccer game.

Idaho nursing students took it on the road on a busy day of contrasts, including a gala luncheon event with Honduran nursing school hosts, followed by a visit to Danli's poorest area near and in a garbage dump. (More later.) Students got lots of practice with patients who had never had a blood pressure or respiratory check, and gave out toothbrushes and other gifts to children.

Just returned from a short, but successful visit with old and new friends in Central America. Students continue receiving scholarships in Jalapa, meeting in January (along with parents) at Martin Luero with staff person Cris Lumbi Cruz. Due to political issues in Nicaragua we temporarily have fewer high school students. But we have bumped up support for University & nursing school level students. Other ISLA friends in Jalapa & at ElPantano are generally well despite recent political problems. Meanwhile, we also met with staff - made new friends in nearby Dani, Honduras - where an ISLA team will be visiting in May.

Mariela, the physical therapist at Jalapa hospital who many ISLA trip-goers may remember, was one of five health workers in the area fired this week for not being considered supportive of the Ortega-Murillo government. Hundreds of medical personnel throughout Nicaragua have been similarly let go in recent weeks. This came on the heels of a protest march in Jalapa which included some violent clashes with Sandinista counter-demonstrators. Allegedly the injured anti-government protesters were refused treatment at the hospital. It is important to note that the attached article is written for an anti-government newspaper. https://www.laprensa.com.ni/2018/09/12/departamentales/2469830-minsa-continua-con-despidos-de-medicos-en-jalapa-nueva-segovia

News from Nicaragua hasn't been good in recent months. But ISLA student scholars continue to receive support and also to meet their community service obligations. Pictured below is a garden planting project being done in Jalapa. In addition, students attending a recent workshop with Cris Lumbi received seeds for their home garden needs.

Despite recent political difficulties and violence in Nicaragua, efforts go on in Jalapa. Here are several residents of La Tierra Prometida, The Promised Land, with their new smoke free stoves installed with ISLA help.
