A bit late as the first session is this Thursday but if you or if you know of anyone who identifies as an Asian man, please share this with them!

I was part of the cohort last year and loved it and will be participating once again. A Call to Men is an incredible organization. Met some amazing men who we've stayed in contact with, as well as those locally in town, we have continued to develop our relationships.

It's free to join and meet virtually on Thursday evenings!

'The Permission to Grieve' event hosted by H.O.P.E. Project MN was fantastic!

It was so wonderful to be in a safe space where black and brown men could share our truths with one another. Wherever we're at in life, wherever we've been, we shared our perspectives, pointers, advices, or just listened.

Thanks to everyone who showed up sharing the gifts of you! Thanks to my amazing friend Vanessa Jenkins for the invite and for Christmas and the team for the incredible work you all do on the daily! Btw just down the road they were simultaneously hosting space for girls and women to meet too.πŸ”₯ πŸ’― πŸ’œ Thanks to Anchored In Wellness Chicago LLC
for the work and all you are. Keep at it my friend! CHICAGO!! 😏😚

One take away I'll share as best as I can remember...

Growth is like the potting of plants. πŸͺ΄πŸŒ± Sometimes we may find ourselves needing to repot, find a bigger one, add more water, more sun, less, or redo the soil, dirt.

Our lives is subjective to another's. What works for one person, may not work for another. The secret in the sauce is to find ways of respecting and honoring that. πŸ™πŸΎ

My mentor .black.12 used to say to me, The hardest conversation to have sometimes is the one with yourselves.

When I began my self-care/self-healing practice, though I didn't know that was what was happening at the time, the practice of sitting made much impact on me.

In mindfulness, it's helpful to first recognize the thought, then eventually allow it to pass on by. πŸ•ŠοΈ
Can you sit and allow these thoughts and feelings to rise? You don't need to know what to do with the thoughts, just sit with them, but just as you are able to be present with them, can you allow them to go?

Orpheus was right, when we sit as uncomfortable it might be, you'll begin to notice things 'rising to the surface.'

I'm blessed to have been graced this lesson, and excited to be able to share it with others now too. If you struggle with this, that's okay, keep practicing, and remain open to what rises to the surface.

I found Dr. Jenny Wang of Asians for Mental Health by chance on Instagram a while back. Given the recent conversations, I've been having more of and being an advocate and leader in encouraging more conversations around mental health, well-being, and mindfulness, I'm doing my best to learn from and support her work.

I came across this podcast she posted yesterday and thought there were a lot of good tips and advice about mental health, specifically during the holidays for all of us.

How interesting, because just a few days ago, after sitting on it, I finally ordered her book, "Permission to Come Home." Love how that works out sometimes, looking forward to diving into it!

Check it out!

In case you want to skip right to it, Dr. Jenny Wang enters at 15:00.

Take care all! REPRESENT!!!

Sometime last year we took a group of high school students to for a campus tour. I remember enjoying that day, so much that I kind of wished I could go back in time and be enrolled there. I loved the atmosphere and support from the different faculty and students I noticed there, and the cool campus center, but I had to come back to the present reality and get on the bus with everyone else. πŸšŒπŸ˜”..
Next Tuesday, I'll be returning to campus, this time speaking to the Asian American Fitness & Wellness group. I'm pumped and look forward to this opportunity. Sometimes it comes super easy, other times not so much, and I get this gut feeling that I fear everything. I fear it won't make as much impact as I hope, that I'm not going to have enough to share, that my ideas are super jumbled and too much for the participants to take in...
But today, as I sat with it, with a cup of honey, lemon, in tea turning on some music...I let it come out. I type it all that I'm feeling. The music, the moments of sound and silence carry me. And before I know it I am moved...
I know that it's going to be amazing, it's going to make an impact, because I am accepting that I'm not the one doing the work, I'm just the vessel to carry it out, and this is my gift to share to the world, my way to be of service to others...
Have to admit, get a little giddy, when I start crying thinking about what's going to be shared. 😽😭😏Cause I can't wait for others to feel safe to feel it too. Here's to all of you practicing trust, keep at it. ..

As I moved the large white board I noticed the quote on the wall by James Baldwin and the painting next to it. This leadership summit was about creating and building community constellations and my workshop in particular was about building community through the importance of first recognizing our history and experiences, then taking the necessary steps to better our mental and physical health because of it. Can it feel uncomfortable at times yes, is it worth it? Yes. ..
I'm grateful for all those who participated. You all made this what it was to each and every soul present. Thank you for providing me the opportunity to share my practice as only I know I can. Let's keep on building. πŸ™πŸΎπŸ’™πŸ§ πŸŒŸ..

Training as a martial artist, fighter, warrior, reminds me there is always something that could be worked on...
The question is do you want to work on it?..
Whether it's something new to you, or something you've done a million times, or something that feels familiar but haven't quite connect with it. Keep working on it. One day you might just surprise yourself.

When traveling it can be difficult to find moments to do the things that are important to you. Especially when the schedule is setup in such a way that there leaves barely any time for it. Sometimes I went to bed earlier, sometimes I woke up earlier, or sometimes I used whatever time we had before we were onto our next destination, even if there was a break in between the day. It doesn't always have to be about time and how much time you spend, it's about priority...
My practice is not just anything anymore, and it's not only a lifestyle. It is what I choose to include in my life. For all the reasons it was when it first began...maybe, but also for all the new reasons it has become. ..
If it's important to you, choose to make time for it. No matter what.
Comes down to priorities...what's yours?..

06/09/2022

For many years I thought eating healthier was too hard and too much work, but during the pandemic I forced myself with the support and help of friends, family, and researching on my own I decided to practice more what to shop for at the groceries, what meals to make, and what foods I grew up thinking was okay to eat might not be necessary for me anymore...
Now that I have chosen a lifestyle choosing to eat more nutritious foods over processed or unnatural ones it can be hard when to decide to eat the foods that I liked growing up. One key anchor or tip that helps me is, "Listening to my body." I am very mindful of what I'm putting in my body and how that relates to my staying active. I like experimenting with different ingredients and meals to see how my body responds to it. y body somehow knows and reminds me, "yep or no we need this or don't."..
The other day, .0 and I saw a Dairy Queen (DQ!)🍦 And a few weeks before I brought up it has been years since I had a Blizzard. This, we decided to treat ourselves to a small treat, that fulfill our childhood nostalgia. πŸ€— The key is to find balance. Sometimes we need to feed not just what nourishes our bodies but also nourishes our mind and soul too. We need to have the discipline enough to not let those foods we once ate without thinking consume us. Just because we grew up eating it, maybe because we had to or it's what our love ones said that was good for us...but we need to be more conscious and do the research, maybe it's not. We just have to be the ones now to choose when or when not to!..
And yes! It was lovely! Got my Blizzaaaad going with the M&M one once again. Bottom line, "TREAT YO SELF!" In all the ways. β€οΈπŸ™πŸΎπŸ§ πŸ˜..

Q: What is your wish for the United States?..
A: That it learns how to prioritize the strengths and opportunities of working as a community or as a collective versus individualization thinking. And although I am not as optimistic as I once was when I was younger, my wish is that this country learns to value all races, cultures, communities, people - but I also know "now" as an adult, there are centuries of built up hatred, trauma, that before my time existed...and what we experience everyday and witness as the bi-product of that. Can it change? I still hope so...

I think one of the greater lessons was to learn how sometimes in life we may not have the answer, we may not know what to do next, we might even be filled with all sorts of emotions and various thoughts. But despite this, we continue to feel encouraged by the practice of being still. Being able to "just sit" is so much more valuable then I think many of us give credit to. ..
Lately, I've been feeling challenged by the concept of time. As we get older how it feels like it moves very fast. Maybe it was the pandemic, maybe it was the shifting to a newer world post what we experienced because of the pandemic, or maybe things are as they are for no particular reason. ..
Perhaps no answer is required, no outcome is necessary. Hehe I'm not sure, but I'm going to work on not giving myself a hard time about it and to just sit. ..
