We are quickly coming up on Thanksgiving. A few reminders…we will be open regular hours on Monday, Nov. 25. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Next Wednesday, the 27th, the center will open at its usual time of noon, but it will close at 6 p.m. Historically, the last hour on Thanksgiving Eve has been exceptionally slow. And because so much of our Wednesday evening staffing is volunteer, we are closing an hour early. We will also be closed on Friday, Nov. 29. Please share! Thank you.

I am not one to rush the Christmas season before Thanksgiving arrives, but we have been getting a substantial amount of electronics lately, much of it in the form of televisions. We are one of very few places in the entire state to accept electronics for recycling free of charge. That is good for our household customers, who aren't obligated to pay by item or by the pound. But like all recycling, collecting, sorting and packaging electronics for pickup by our contractor is work. Please consider putting a few bucks in the donation box if you're able. Especially if you are traveling from outside of Elk County. If you are looking to recycle old electronics in your house before Santa drops off something new, know that we accept electronics every day that we are open to the public. Our hours are at the top of the page. There is very little in the realm of electronics that we can't take, but two of the biggies are coffee makers and sweepers (unless you have a Kirby or a vintage Electrolux). If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Catholic Foundation awards grants to Elk County parishes

Two parishes in Elk County will have the opportunity to further serve those in their community thanks to grants from the Catholic Foundation of Northwest Pennsylvania.
Queen of the World Parish in St. Marys, a first-time grant recipient, plans to create a comfort care room for terminal patients and their families at the Penn Highlands Elk hospital. “This project would provide the families not only a more comfortable place to care for their loved ones, but would also serve as an emotional refuge,” Jessica Weinzierl, business manager for Queen of the World, wrote in her grant application. “Providing support to families in time of illness and grief aligns with our mission of service and work of God.”
Saint Boniface Parish in Kersey will use their grant toward the installation of a handicap entrance into the church building. Saint Boniface pastor, Father Kevin Holland, wrote in his grant application, “With this grant funding, more elderly will have the confidence that they can safely enter and leave Saint Boniface. Our hope is that more of our homebound parishioners will feel comfortable and safe enough to come and worship in their parish.”

🚧 Roadwork Update for St. Marys, PA 🚧
Attention St. Marys residents: (TUESDAY 11/19/2024) A contractor will be applying a 1/2-inch paving leveling course on Lemans Road and Capri Road to improve roadway conditions.
This is not a permanent fix, but it is being done to:
✅ Smooth out the roadway
✅ Level utility trenches that have been sinking
If the utility cuts stabilize and stop sinking, we plan to proceed with a full overlay in the future.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to improve our roads! Please drive carefully in construction zones.
Thank you,
City of St Marys

Puppetry with Professor James being held Saturday at the St. Marys Public Library

On Saturday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon, learn about puppets and how they are being used to help people who struggle with mental health and older adults with dementia or Alzheimer’s during a program at the St. Marys Public Library.
The puppetry program is for adults and older children. It's about how to create and use puppets and their benefits. Puppetry can support memory and the therapeutic process. It can help people reduce stress and increase social interaction. Puppetry can help stimulate the brain and enhance fine motor skills, and help people engage with emotions that go beyond words and memory.
Professor Orin James teaches at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Over the summer he led two dissection camps at the library for middle school students. Professor James has taught vertebrate zoology and human anatomy and physiology as well as hybrid courses that included discussions of social philosophy. He writes poetry, takes photographs and is the host of his own web-based radio show.
