Our mission is to express creativity, spark inspiration, and bring life to art. Augustine, the nation’s oldest city, our staff continually strives to bring creative energy into each page of our publication. Our purpose is to accurately represent the artists while welcoming them into a historic community that continues to uphold the value of ingenuity and originality. By selecting the best poetry,

fiction, creative nonfiction, and art from artists across the nation, FLARE works to create a truthful collaboration of the human experience. Like a flare sent into the darkness, the flames of creativity fuel our community. FLARE is a literary journal published by students through the Flagler College English Department. The publication is printed annually in the spring, along with an online Web site. FLARE seeks to publish both up-and-coming and established writers. Accepting of both the traditional and experimental in the poetry, fiction, nonfiction, drama, and screenplay genres, we strive to showcase a variety of colorful, vibrant works from passionate writers.

The FLARE 2024 launch party yesterday evening was lovely. We were so excited to hold readings from the issue and share the work of our talented contributors in the beautiful solarium in the Ponce building of historic Flagler College. Many thanks to everyone who attended, and to Peter Hartley for providing us with music. There was a great spread of food, free issues, some swag, and lots of laughs. It was a wonderful way to wrap up another FLARE run, and celebrate our 35th anniversary!

Don't forget, tonight is the FLARE launch party! We hope to see you there 🥳

We would like to extend our warmest gratitude to Cheyenne Koth Leahy for all her work on this latest issue of FLARE: The Flagler Review, as well as many of our past issues. Cheyenne is a Flagler College alum, and a former FLARE editor, and she has stuck by us, helping us out, and we could not have completed the issue without her. Indeed, she is the InDesign QUEEN! That careful layout and design you see is all Cheyenne’s doing. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Cheyenne! 🙏

🎉Introducing FLARE'S 2024 cover🎉

This piece by J.C. Alfier is called "Toward Nightfall."

This collage drew our editors in, making us feel that we, like the photo's subjects, were walking "toward nightfall" and into this odyssey-themed issue.

We can't wait for you to hold the book in your hands and see all the other amazing art pieces inside its pages!

Artist Bio:
J.C. Alfier's (they/them) most recent book of poetry, The Shadow Field, was published by Louisiana Literature Press (2020). Journal credits include The Emerson Review, Faultline, New York Quarterly, Notre Dame Review, Penn Review, Southern Poetry Review, and Vassar Review. They are also an artist doing collage and double-exposure work.

Friends of FLARE, it’s time for Roar and Raise once again! Any donation is much appreciated. Thank you for supporting the Flagler Review!

FLARE: The Flagler Review is an award-winning literary journal published by English Department students at Flagler College, recently celebrating their 35th anniversary. FLARE seeks to publish both up-and-coming and established artists and writers, featuring poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.
All gifts made during Roar & Raise will support attendance at the 2025 AWP (Association of Writers and Writing Programs) Conference in Los Angeles to host a FLARE: The Flagler Review table at the book fair, to bolster our visibility within the national writing community. FLARE’s attendance at AWP in Philadelphia in 2022 was so successful and enriching for student interns, and raised our visibility in the literary community, and we hope to repeat the experience!

Introducing this year's editor-in-chief Sophia Falber!
It is her third year with FLARE, and she served last year as the Head Poetry Editor.

Sophia's favorite part of FLARE is:

"The spirited discussions we have in the editing room and the sense of community. With FLARE, the creation of the literary journal is as much of a creative process as writing for one is. It has been super beneficial as a writer myself to see the other side of the curtain. I have a big appreciation for my fellow editors now!"
