Etruria was launched on this day in 1902 into the Saginaw River at Bay City. It only sailed for three seasons- a career cut tragically short by a foggy collision in 1905. All the crew made it off the boat, and the ship was discovered by NOAA 106 years later.

A Christmas Eve Storm in 1979 sank the EM Ford. The cement had to be chipped out of the hold and the ship had one of the longest careers ever on the lakes (built in 1898). Enjoy the slideshow with pictures courtesy Manse collection and Boatnerd.

Remember that anchor brought up from the Detroit River a few weeks ago? It was dropped there because the steamer Greater Detroit didn't have steam to pick it up. The 6,000 pound anchor was cut loose and the ship was set afire to gut the woodwork on this date in 1956. After it cooled it was cut up across the river in Canada. Archive pics from Reuther Library.

13 men had to be rescued on this date in 1939 when the JR Sensibar was being towed from Chicago. The tow line snapped in a storm and the ship ran aground just south of Grand Haven. Ironically.. the Sensibar was named for a man famous for moving beach sand. Jacob Sensibar leveled dunes to create Gary Indiana, and was famous for creating much of the beach area around Chicago. One article said this was the last time the breeches buoy was used for rescue on the Great Lakes!
