Sacramento State guard Jackson Slater is rising on NFL teams’ draft boards after a dominant showing at the Reese’s Senior Bowl. Get to know Slater with our new series, Draft Diaries, which will follow Slater until the NFL Draft in April.

Players from smaller schools, like Sac State, rarely get a chance in an event as prestigious as the Senior Bowl. Of the 137 players on the Senior Bowl’s roster this year, only five, including Slater, came from the FCS level.
“I always kind of envisioned it for myself,” Slater said. “Halfway into that day one of practice is when I felt confident where I was at … that was when I was like ‘Yeah, this makes sense.’”

announced with $.7 million for new desks and chairs for classrooms. The funding will come from a Covid-era federal grant with limited uses according to the update. The change comes after feedback from listening sessions held in 2023 by Wood where students voiced concerns over the lack of accessibility in classrooms.

Students can contribute by filling out a feedback form to tell administration which classrooms have the most need.

Sacramento State President Luke Wood announced a preemptive plan from administration to tackle the budget cuts plaguing the whole CSU system. He presented this plan to the faculty senate, who must approve of Wood’s plan before it can go into effect.

Wood said that the plan was tailored for Sac State and would be different than other schools struggling with budget cuts.

The freeze will pause federal loans and grants that affect numerous programs such as public universities in America according to the Associated Press and CNN. The freeze will not disrupt FAFSA or scholarships, but could have an effect on other centers and programs on campus.

Sac State introduced , in his signature cowboy hat, as the program’s 13th head coach in a press conference on Wednesday.

Marion spoke about the team’s success in the transfer portal, his culture and his journey to becoming the headman at Sac State.

“We are a program that is going to be seeking championships– always about winning,” Marion said. “Whether we are in the Big Sky, FBS, Power 4, we want to be about winning championships and playing at the highest level.”

On Monday, Jan. 22 the California Faculty Association went on strike for the second time this academic year at the start of the spring 2024 semester. The CFA announced that they reached an agreement with California State University and canceled their five-day strike. Faculty and students returned to campus for classes Tuesday, Jan. 23. Peak Adventures is an outdoor recreation program through @sacstate striving to build connections for students while enrolled at the college. The program allows participants to travel throughout Northern California and down to Joshua Tree, learning skills along the way. The State Hornet staffer Madelaine Church started to travel with Peak Adventures during her second year in 2021. From trekking through fresh Tahoe snow to backpacking next to the ocean from Point Reyes, Church used her photojournalism skills to document over 10 trips for two years. From the photos captured she created a scrapbook piece to share some of the impact the trips had and memories created for this story.
