State and local leaders announced a new school zone safety education campaign that calls on drivers to know the “ABCs” for safety – Alert for Bicyclists and Children crossing – as students return to school.
“As students head back to school, we want every trip to be a safe one,” said OTS Director Stephanie Dougherty. “The ‘ABCs for School Zone Safety’ campaign highlights driving basics that protect children on their daily routes. Remember your ABCs on every trip—stay alert for bicyclists and watch for and yield to children crossing the street.”
In addition to the ABCs for safety, local and state partners have four key tips to remember for back-to-school and school zone safety:
• Plan for Extra Time and Be Patient: Expect delays around schools and give yourself a buffer so you’re not in a rush.
• Stop for School Buses: With few exceptions, California law requires drivers to stop in both directions when a school bus has flashing red lights on. Drivers must stop until the red lights are off.
• Slow Down: Follow the posted speed limits—especially during school start and end times and when children are present.
• Avoid Distractions: Keep your phone down and eyes up—one moment of inattention can lead to tragedy.
