I read something somewhere that said “if you bring your dogs with you they may slow you down, but maybe that’s the point”.

This saying really hit hard during our road trip in Washington. We were on day 6 of our trip, and while Tim and I were starting to feel tired from it all, we had an itinerary to follow. So we continued on with our scheduled plans. That evening while we were eating dinner, Oats had a seizure.

Tim and I had a long talk that night about all of the things we could’ve done differently to avoid this seizure - so many “what ifs…” and “if we didn’t do this, maybe it wouldn’t have happened”. We decided to end our trip early and headed home the next morning.

The day after we got home, Tim came down with the flu. And Oats, well he woke up full of excitement to play with his toys, and then took a nice long nap on the deck.

Things happen for a reason, and I’m not saying that this seizure was a good thing AT ALL. Every time Oats has a seizure, I feel a type of anxiety that I didn’t know existed and wouldn’t wish it on any pet parent. But what I’m saying is, Oats was telling us that we needed to slow down.

Oats is our reminder that it’s okay to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life - the walks along the neighborhood trails, picking berries out in the yard, and napping out on the deck. We love this little guy so much, and he’s such an integral part of our lives. No clue what we'd do without him ❤️

We just got back from a week long road trip around the Olympic Peninsula, which is HUGE and had lots to do.

We recommend checking out these spots 👇

1️⃣ Ruby Beach & Kalaloch Beach
These beaches are full of rock formations and tide pools. Kalaloch Beach also has the Tree of Life.

2️⃣ Hoh River
The river is SO blue and was such a fun stop on our way to the rainforest.

3️⃣ Hoh Rainforest (🚫🐕)
The Quinault Rainforest is a great dog-friendly alternative to the national park trail (Hall of Mosses, pictured). We wish we visited there instead, but still beautiful.

4️⃣ La Push & Forks
We stopped at Forks and then La Push, lots of mentions of Twilight (the movie). La Push Beach is full of driftwood and rock formations.

5️⃣&6️⃣ Cape Flattery
Northwesternmost point of the US and such a beautiful hike. Definitely worth the drive up!

7️⃣&8️⃣ Salt Creek Recreation Area
This park has tide pools & hikes through the rainforest. We even saw an orca from our campsite!!

9️⃣&🔟 Whale Watching Tour
We took the out of Port Angeles & saw humpback whales, orcas & sea lions!

1️⃣1️⃣ Lake Crescent
Hiked to Devils Punchbowl & the views were incredible. You can also jump off the bridge for a dip in the lake.

1️⃣2️⃣ Hurricane Ridge
This scenic drive leads to an amazing view of the Olympic mountains.

While we saw so much, we feel like we barely scratched the surface.

Does anyone else feel like they need to plan another trip after visiting somewhere new? Or is it just us 😅

Mount Rainier in August vs October 🌸🌼 ➡️ 🍂❄️

Although they're only a couple months apart, the park looks completely different from August to October 🤯

August is when the wildflowers are out in full force, and October is equally as colorful with the fall foliage - even snow!

I love visiting places during different seasons to see how much the landscape changes ⛰️

Hiking BEHIND waterfalls?? Say no more 🥾💦

Silver Falls State Park is known for the Trail of Ten Falls - a hiking loop that takes you to 10 waterfalls, some of which you can even walk behind!! 🤯

Each waterfall was more stunning than the last. Definitely recommend adding this state park to your Oregon bucket list!

Trail details:
🥾 7.4 miles, moderate fifficulty
👉 Short loop is 4.8 miles (7 waterfalls)
🐕 This trail is NOT dog friendly 🚫
🎫 $5 day use parking permit

Please remember to Leave No Trace and keep the trail clean so others can continue to enjoy it 🚮

Our weekend plans involve spending time in our backyard 🏔

Okay, well this isn't really what our backyard looks like... but ever since we moved to a little mountain town in Oregon, the amount of time we spend driving to destinations has decreased significantly 🙌

Mount Hood is within an hour from us, and there is SO much to do nearby. So in that sense, it does feel like our "backyard", and we've made it a goal to explore as much of the area we live in as possible 🥾💦🏕

We originally planned to camp outside of Bend this weekend, but with all of the wildfires we had to pivot - and we feel blessed that a weekend "at home" is still just as exciting 😌

What's on your agenda for the weekend?

Is your dog a water dog, or land dog?

Despite the amount of time he spends on water, Oats actually doesn't like getting in 💦 He prefers to stay on the board lol.

This is 7 🥳

Oats turns 7 today (we think...) and we cannot believe we've been lucky enough to spend 7 adventurous years with this goofball 🐶

For those who know Oats, he is kind, gentle, playful, and overall the goodest boy.

We sure did get lucky in college when we found a Craigslist post and rescued him from a very unfortunate backyard breeding situation. He has been right by our side through many different phases of life ever since 🥰

Happy birthday to Oats! ❤️

We’re (finally) back 🐕‍🦺👫

It’s been almost a year since we stopped posting regularly on here 😅

At the time, we were in the process of moving from California to Oregon. Keeping up with Haulin’ Oats while working our 9-5s and taking on all the other changes that were coming felt impossible, & we got burnt out.

All the while, Oats was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy, put on medication, and struggled with activities that were once so easy for him. We quickly realized that we needed to change our lifestyle to accommodate Oats’s new needs because his health was our priority.

Oats has settled in to the PNW life well and seems to love it here! It has been so great to watch him thrive and get back to his playful and adventure-loving self 🐶🫶

We can't wait to share what we've been up to!

Scrolling through these photos, it's crazy to think that they were all taken in one weekend 📷

We visited Mount Rainier National Park last weekend and we experienced all of the seasons. One day we hiked in t-shirts, the next in puffer jackets. We saw lots of fall foliage, and also hiked on snowy trails 🍂☀️❄️ This park is incredible.

It feels really good to be settled into our new place and getting out on adventures again 🏠🚘

Happy to be back and excited to share all of our upcoming adventures in the PNW 🫶

Life update! We're moving to...

Oregon! 🌲🏔

In just two weeks we'll be moving to Northern Oregon 😲 It feels crazy that we're about to do our third move in 3 years, but we're so excited for this next chapter.

When we finished school and moved to California, we really didn't know how long we would spend here. After realizing how much there is to see and do, we wanted to stick around for all the adventures 🥾🤿⛷️🐾🚵‍♀️

We've made so many incredible memories here, but it's time to explore new areas 🗺

So get ready for lots of dog-friendly adventures in the PNW! We'll also continue sharing all of our California reccs since there's still soo many we have yet to share with you guys.

Thanks for being here 🧡

It's hard to not fall in love with Bend, Oregon especially when you realize how many different adventures there are here! ⛰️🥾🚵‍♀️⛷️

We got to do some rock climbing at Smith Rock State Park and were so surprised that Oats was allowed to tag along since state parks aren't dog friendly in CA 🐶🧗‍♂️

Oats loved our guide from and so did we. Got to see this beautiful park for the first time in a really fun way (scroll for the views 🤩)

Thanks for an awesome day of climbing 👍

We love that Oats can join us on our hiking adventures, but just like us he needs his own gear to be able to do it safely 🐶⛰

This hike was a bit tough with sections of rock scrambling, and having Oats' harness allowed us to provide support when he needed it. After the hike we all needed some time to rest, and our hammocks and comfy chairs back at the campsite certainly helped.

Cabela's has such a variety of outdoor products from many different brands that we trust, from Kurgo dog products to Eno lounge gear. It's so convenient being able to shop for ourselves and Oats in one store 👍

If you're looking for gear for your upcoming adventure, shop through the link in our bio!

Paddleboarding has become one of our favorite summer activities, and it's even better that we can bring Oats along.

We were a bit nervous at first to bring him with us, because despite loving the beach Oats hates being in water...

But after realizing that with a paddleboard you can be ON the water without having to get IN the water, I think he realized that it was pretty cool lol.

And it's perfect for us because we like to take a dip in the water to cool off (except for this sunrise paddle where it was pretty chilly).

What's your favorite summer activity to beat the heat?

The typical progression of taking photos with Oats:

Phase 1: "Ooh look at all those mountains we should climb!"

Phase 2: "Why are we just standing here? I'm leaving."

Oats really is not a fan of taking pictures. Literally when I take my phone out he becomes camera shy, which is why most photos and videos taken of him are from the back lol.

Does your dog like posing for photos, or are they like Oats too?

We're in the middle of a heat wave right now and dreaming of a weekend in Mendocino 🫶

Mendocino is the perfect coastal town in California and we have loved every trip we've gone on to this area. Here's highlights from our past trips to this adorable and tranquil area:

1. Enjoying the sunset on the west coast 🌅

2-3. Going on a dog-friendly train ride through the redwoods (yup, you read that right!) 🚂

4-5. Taking a shower in a magical redwood tree and enjoy the cozy glamping cabins at 🏕

6. Visiting one of many local beaches (this is Jug Handle Beach, dog-friendly) 🌊

7. Grabbing breakfast at and get a breakfast burrito the size of your head (p.s. their lattes are amazing) ☕️

8. Going for a hike through the massive redwood trees🌲

So after sharing ours, I'm curious... what's your favorite coastal town/area??

The great thing about visiting Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks with your dog is that there's national forest land right in the middle 🐶🏔

Last weekend we spent four nights camping in the park and found some really fun dog friendly adventures!

One of the hikes we did was through the Jenny Lake Wilderness. We actually did this hike 2 years ago, however the trail was completely different after the record breaking snowfall this year 🤯

Swipe to the end to see what this lake looked like 2 years ago today 👉

1. Views of Weaver Lake. Tim carried our inflatable SUP all the way up there - the real mvp 👏

2. We did not expect to see snow on the trail in July ❄️ (while also getting chewed by mosquitos...)

3. Many creek crossings that were not here last time. On the way back this log was completely submerged in the flowing water 🪵💦

4. Finally made it to the top & got Oats on the paddleboard!

5. A perfect hammock spot 👌

6. The lake was frozen over in some areas which was absolutely insane 🧊

7. After spending a few hours up there, we started the trek back down for some dinner 🍴

8. Oats passed out in his tent as soon as we got back to camp 🏕💤

9. The lake this time 2 years ago! No snow, no flowing creek, no ice. Absolutely insane.

Overall we this hike! Some people go for a day hike or a backpacking trip. There's another lake further out, too!

Are you still seeing snow in July??

We love camping, but we also enjoy being comfortable and when we first started camping, we weren't quite sure how to get the best of both worlds. /ad

The Haven Tents lay flat hammock helps with that. It's a hybrid tent that is super versatile:

It can be pitched to the ground like a standard tent ✨️AND✨️ it can be suspended from trees to hang like a hammock 🏕

They even have 2 models - the Haven XL and Safari (pictured) - with higher weght capacities, allowing me to fit Oats in between my legs 🐶

This lay-flat hammock will save us from even more body aches after a long day of hiking and adventures. It just may be the most comfortable way to sleep in nature 👌😴

Oats surprised us this weekend...

in a good way!

A few months ago, Oats started taking medication for his seizures. It changed a lot because he needed time to adjust and we weren't really sure how the medication was making him feel. But we did notice that he seemed to get tired much quicker, so we put a pause on trips and hiking.

We camped in Mount Shasta this weekend and it was our first trip in a while. We were nervous that he would struggle on the tougher hikes we had planned, but instead he handled them like a champ 👏

You could see it in his face and body language that he was so happy to be out exploring with his humans again 🥰

Stay tuned to see Oats in action and the insane views we got over the weekend! ⛰️🐕

We travel a lot on the weekends which makes it difficult to restock Oats' supplements on time, but thanks to Chewy we can get them delivered right to our door 📦

What's in Oats' autoship order:
🔸Pet Honesty Fish Oil - Oats was recently diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy, and we learned that omega-3 fish oil can be beneficial for brain regulation. It helps promote healthy skin and a shiny coat, in addition to providing immune and joint support.

🔸Zesty Paws Aller-Immune Bites - help alleviate Oats' allergy symptoms such as itchy skin and rashes, and supports a healthy immune system.

🔸Cosequin: Oats has suffered a few injuries over the years which have caused ongoing problems, and these are great for joint support to reduce stiffness.

We also throw in some of his favorite toys and treats, and he's always excited to sniff through the box 🧸🦴

Check out Chewy for all your dog parent needs, we have a link in our bio! They offer $20 off your first order if you're a new customer.

*we make a small commission if you use our link, and really appreciate it if you decide to!

When food is cooking, you can usually find Oats nearby... 🐶

Like many dogs, Oats is very food motivated which means that whenever we're cooking a meal at our campsite you can find him nearby trying to lend a hand (or should I say paw 🐾).

We enjoy cooking meals while camping, and is making that a bit easier with their new folding camp table. Perfect for campsites that don't have a picnic table, or if you just need some extra table space! 🏕

I think our favorite part about this table is that it has a storage area underneath to help keep your cookware organized and easily accessible. Cooking felt simplified with everything we needed right within our reach. 🍴

Now if only the cleanup afterwards could feel the same way... washing dishes at camp is our least favorite part about cooking lol 😅

They're running a sale right now, so check out the link in our bio 👍

Swipe to see what we were up to last weekend ➡️

Gualala is a coastal town in California that we've really grown to love. It's so relaxing and the perfect place to unwind 👍

We found a bluff trail with insane views of the coast, that also turned into full rainforest vibes 😍

What better way to end a day than reading a good book in a cozy hammock at your campsite in the redwoods 🌲📚

P.S. Oats has a paw injury which is why he's wearing 1 boot, but we think he looks like a badass 🐶🐾

Unfiltered series: local hike 🥾

We've spent the last two weekends at home, and have been trying to take advantage of the great hiking trails nearby ⛰️

We also wanted Oats to test out his new (swipe to see his goggles in action!) 👉

So we hiked around Folsom Lake and spotted many beautiful flowers. The lupines are in full bloom this time of year! 🪻

Idk what it is, but the flowers feel so vibrant this year 🥰

Oats has seen some pretty incredible views!

Whenever we visit national parks, we feel a bit frustrated about the limitations we experience while traveling with pets, but feel fortunate to find spots and/or hikes that we're able to enjoy with Oats 🐾

Here's some of Oats' favorite views:
1. Enjoying an incredible view of Mount Rainier from a hike outside of the park
2. Taking in the scenery in Canyonlands from a service road
3. Stopped on the side of the road in Badlands NP
4. Crater Lake from a view point

Have you brought your dog(s) to national parks?

Unfiltered series: San Diego ☀️🌴

In an effort to share more day-to-day photos, we're starting an "unfiltered series" where we'll be sharing unedited photos 📷

San Diego is a special place because it was the first part of California that we visited, and the reason we moved here three years ago. Although we didn't move to San Diego, we have visited the area many times over the years 🫶

1. Walking on the beach is one of Oats' favorite activities 🐕

2. View of paragliders from Black's Beach. This beach was pretty cool since you have to hike down to it. Also, it's a "clothing optional" beach.

3. Enjoying the sunset over Mission Beach 🌅

4. The BEST breakfast in San Diego. SD has some of the best food we've ever eaten, and is our go-to when we're in Little Italy 🤤

5. Views from paragliding! Such a cool experience with 🪂

6. Oats getting ready to chomp down a pup patty from 🍔

7. Little Italy has a farmer's market every Saturday from 8-2. Coffee, food, vendors, plants, etc. 🧺

8. Just a casual beach selfie - trying to take more selfies instead of posed photos all the time 🤷

9. Paddleboarding on Mission Bay was a lot of fun. Tip: go early in the morning when the water is still 🌊

10. Renting a sailboat was so much fun! Luckily Tim has sailing experience because the bay was packed and there were many obstacles to avoid lmao ⛵

Hope you like this new series! Let us know your thoughts below 😊

California really is a crazy state - one weekend we're skiing in Tahoe and the next we're on the beach in San Diego.

We're so excited for summer since it's the season for hiking and camping, but also getting out on the water. We loved snorkeling when we lived in southern california, and have enjoyed paddleboarding once we moved up north and away from the coast.

What activities are you excited to get back into this summer? 👇

Experiences > things 👍

We've decided a few years ago that we don't want gifts for birthdays and holidays anymore. Instead, we'll typically go on a trip 🧳🌎

We've gone on so many hiking and camping trips that we wanted to spice things up 🌶️

For Tim's birthday this year we went to San Diego and tried paragliding. It was SO much fun and such a thrill trying something new 🪂⛰️

We're spending my (Ris) birthday this year in Napa and booked something else we've never done before 🥳

Hint: 🎈🔥

Any guesses?! ⬇️

When we go to the park, we always make sure to pack treats for Oats 🐾

Since Oats is a border collie, he does a lot of running at the park. He also likes to hunt for squirrels in the trees, but that's another story lol.

We like to bring something that can be both a healthy snack and a reward for training. Lately he has been loving these sweet potato slices from . The slices are all-natural dehydrated sweet potatoes with no preservatives.

It feels good knowing that Oat's treats are full of antioxidants and minerals. They're also gluten & grain free which is great for dog's with allergies. Oat's definitely approves!
