It took the mention of wandering coyotes and a third pregnancy, combined with an aching back, to convince me to get behind the wheel. But I did, eventually, though I still have my google settings on "highways off" and get sweaty palms if my GPS takes me close to I-95.

Even once we moved here I was hesitant to get behind the wheel, and for the first few weeks I walked in the stubborn September heat from Milton Point all the way to my children’s nursery school on the edge of town.

Most recently Gay was involved in a Big Apple robbery spree from November 2023 to February -- including muggings targeting elderly victims. During that period, he reportedly robbed five people, including a 90-year-old woman and an 83-year-old man.

Elijah Gay was arrested by Rye police following a warrant issued. The fake bills were allegedly used at All Paws Gourmet Pet Store and Sammy + Nat.

A change in the building permit fee structure from $17 -- per $1,000 estimated value of improvement -- to $18 will result in a $105,546 increase in revenue, according to City Planner Christian Miller. The fee was last raised in 2013.

The council voted Wednesday to raise residential building permit fees by $1. The adjustment brings the tax rate hike down to 5.07 percent.

The toughest test of the Garnets' young season was their most recent, as they battled a talented Henrick Hudson team for four quarters before finishing off a 65-54 win on Dec. 13.

The first week of the 2024-25 basketball season was highly successful for the Rye High School girls team. The Garnets have played three games and won all three by double digits.

If you're already tired of holing up at home and streaming "Dune: Prophecy" to avoid the frigid temps, you may want to check out the Rye boys hockey schedule for a home game at Playland over the next few months.

Rye may hold a record of 0-2-1, but back-and-forth games against perennial hockey postseason contenders bode well for the year ahead.

For Carroll, creating paintings of this scale and installing them against the backdrop of the Long Island Sound is an honor. Coveleigh had commissioned one of her pieces years earlier, a painting of lilies that was installed in the parlor.

The three 65-inch by 65-inch canvases line a white wall in the newly renovated ballroom at Coveleigh, opposite the windows facing the Long Island Sound in Rye.

The citizen complaints led to sharply increased police enforcement. There were 28 citations issued for leaf blower violations in 2024, up from just five in 2023. A first offense carries a fine of $250, and continued violations can lead to fines as high as $1500.

Rye police reported that calls about illegal leaf blower use — including the use of more than one blower — rose to 107 in 2024 from 60 in 2023.

What do you call a team captain and four-year varsity starter who led her team to league titles all four years and played on a state champion girls' soccer team in 2023? Wait, that's not all: she also sports a grade point average over 100.

Not only was Brown on the field for the Garnets’ 4-2 Sectional title win over Somers on Nov. 2, she led the team through regional play, shutting out New Paltz 4-0 on Nov. 7 and whitewashing Chenango Valley 6-0 two days later.
