With 128 additional absentee and provisional ballots approved as of Thursday afternoon, Antoinetta Cash Royster’s grip on the third and final seat available on the Person County Board of Commissioners is tightening.
At the end of Election Day last Tuesday, Royster (D) led incumbent Republican Derrick Sims by 5 votes.
Results are unofficial until the county Board of Elections officially completes its canvass today, but the additional ballots take Royster’s lead to 41 (8,784 to 8,743).
We are still in the margin for a recount if those results hold.
After the canvass is completed and results are official, the candidate who finishes fourth will have until 5 p.m. Monday to request a recount.
The Board of Elections has scheduled a meeting to conduct the recount next Wednesday, if one is requested.

Today, Person County election workers, Board of Elections officials, and elections staff conducted the hand count audit required by law.

Under state law, every county must conduct a hand count of ballots in two randomly selected precincts, early voting sites, or absentee ballots to confirm results tabulated by machine. Bipartisan teams of counters conduct the hand counts during public meetings. Results of the hand count are compared to the results as tabulated by voting machines to ensure accuracy.

This is just one step in the post-election process to verify accuracy of election results. County boards of elections will certify their results on Friday, November 15.
