Me: “Dr. Beckford, you gotta come to Detroit and get these kids! I’m telling you, Detroit band kids are special!

Dr.Beckford: “Say Less!”.

Cut to He and Dr.(Mrs.) Beckford who was ALWAYS by his side, brave the cold and come to the D!

I have ALWAYS said that Dr.Richard Beckford was this generations Bobby L. Brown. Because of the way he loved his kids and went beyond the standard of being a band director to become a father figure to many.

Because Dr.Beckford saw the value in making a pipeline from Detroit to Florida Memorial University, today the first young lady to make the FMU The ROAR Marching Band LionEssence danceline came from this very school, my niece Devin who was the dance captain in her band, and the daughter of my high school bestie Robin Peoples .

This band, Southfield A&T Marching Band is led by my Mackenzie High Band of Renown brother and Southern University Human Jukebox Alumni, LaShawn Gary. The former Director Dr. Charles, was the band student of my middle school band director, Mr.Nicholson.

A Full circle moment.

Dr.Beckford was ALWAYS thinking out the box and about providing opportunities. My job was to keep
the camera on and tell the story.

This part of the story is in Bobby's Kids Movie. Didn’t realize it at the time, but we were making history. I am so grateful for this moment
and the entire journey. God is intentional.

May you rest in peace Dr.Beckford.🕊️

ATLANTA, GA — In celebration of the upcoming national television and streaming release of Bobby’s Kids, award-winning filmmaker and brand strategist Brandi Mitchell is officially launching BANDATHON™ — a month-long media and impact event leading up to the film’s premiere in February 2026.

Bobby’s Kids, which just secured national distribution, chronicles the legacy of legendary Detroit band director Bobby L. Brown and the generational impact of music education, mentorship, and exposure. The film is deeply rooted in the message: What You Can See, You Can Be — and BANDATHON™ puts that message into action.

To kick things off, Mitchell sat down for an exclusive interview with jazz luminary Vincent Gardner, founding artistic director of Jazz Houston and long-time member of Jazz at Lincoln Center — who, despite his decades of global accolades, began his journey like many: in the marching band. The two, both FAMU alumni and former bandmates, shared a powerful conversation on music, legacy, and what’s possible when students are given the gift of exposure.

🎬 BANDATHON™ – a one-of-a-kind daily interview series celebrating legacy, leadership, and what’s possible through the lens of band culture. Featuring in-studio and virtual appearances from top musicians, band alumni, high school and HBCU directors, and cultural icons.

🎟️ Private VIP Screenings at KORIS Studio™ – invite-only pre-screenings of Bobby’s Kids in an intimate, red carpet setting designed to spark conversation and connection ahead of the public release.

🎓 Masterclass Series – transformational conversations and workshops to help professionals and creatives take bold action toward their own brilliance, aligned with the film’s message of legacy, exposure, and elevation.

These activations are part of Mitchell’s mission to make Bobby’s Kids more than just a film — but a national movement to inspire the next generation and honor the visionary educators and mentors who shaped us.

As BANDATHON™ continues through January, Mitchell and her team are aligning with:

🎯 Brands & companies looking to support Black excellence in education, the arts, legacy work and Black History Month programming

🎯 Alumni & influencers with powerful stories to share

🎯 Schools, organizations, and nonprofits ready to partner on screenings or mentorship activations

“Our goal is to move people from inspiration to implementation,” says Mitchell. “Bobby’s Kids shows what one person can do to change lives. BANDATHON™ gives us the space to activate that belief.”

📣 NEW FILM ‘BOBBY’S KIDS’ HONORS THE LEGACY OF LEGENDARY BAND DIRECTORS WHO CHANGED LIVES FAR BEYOND THE FIELD

While most people see band directors as music teachers, those of us who’ve lived it know the truth — the best of them become lifelong mentors, father figures, and door openers to possibility.

Bobby’s Kids, the upcoming nationally televised documentary premiering in February 2026 by Brandi Mitchell, sheds light on one of Detroit’s hidden heroes: Mr. Bobby L. Brown — a Southern University Human Jukebox alum who came to Detroit in the 1980s and didn’t just teach music… he changed destinies.

At Mackenzie High School, Mr. Brown brought the powerful HBCU band culture north — igniting passion, pride, and purpose in his students. With nothing but a camera, a vision, and an unshakable belief in his kids, he created a pipeline to HBCUs and band scholarships that launched hundreds of inner-city Detroit youth into a new future.

And he’s not alone.

The film also features Dr. Richard Beckford, a legendary band director from South Florida who, like Mr. Brown, used music as ministry and mentorship. Over more than three decades, Dr. Beckford helped thousands of South Florida students attend college through music — eventually becoming Director of Bands at Florida Memorial University.

His band, The ROAR, and his story are captured in the film — an echo of the same powerful impact Mr. Brown made in Detroit. Their paths never crossed in person, but their missions were the same: to see the unseen, believe in the overlooked, and create legacy through sound.

The film also pays tribute to other giants in band education, including Dr. William P. Foster and Dr. Isaac Greggs, reminding us all of the enduring power of Black excellence in music and mentorship.

It’s only fitting that Bobby’s Kids premieres during Black History Month, highlighting the men behind the music — the leaders whose classrooms weren’t just rehearsal spaces, but launch pads for greatness.

This is not just a film. It’s a movement.

The Power Of One.
One Dream.
One Shot.
One Opportunity.
One Life Changing Band Experience.
One Man Came to Detroit from Louisiana and Changed Everything. This is His.Story.

When one person dares to believe, it unlocks belief in all of us.

Mr. Brown didn’t wait for permission. He didn’t fold under pressure. He showed us what was possible, and because of that, we believed we could do it too.

That’s the power of one.
One vision.
One voice.
One band director with a camera and a dream.
One decision to push past resistance.
One spark that lit the path for hundreds.

I’m one of them. One of Bobby’s Kids.
And now it’s my turn to carry the baton forward with this film… this movement.

They’re calling it the real-life Drumline… but it’s so much more.

This film is for us, by us, and it’s been 12 years in the making.

🎥 21 tapes. One powerful story.

A real journey, through the lens of the band, the culture, and the teacher who changed everything for a group of band kids in Detroit.

I’ve carried this story for years, and now it’s time to share it with the world.
Because band doesn’t just teach music, it builds leaders, saves lives, and leaves legacy.

This film is more than clips.
It’s the soul of our community told through rhythm, discipline, and the power of one teacher to spark a movement.

🎥 Bobby’s Kids is coming.
It’s for us. By us. About all of us.
