What can learn from AWS re:Invent 2023?

The conference and expo hosted by Amazon Web Services attracted tens of thousands customers, partners and AWS team members to Las Vegas Nov. 27-Dec. 1.

Held at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas, the expo was the place to be to access a wide range of activities, including the AWS Village, the AWS Community Developer Lounge, sponsor booths and learning opportunities.

On the show floor, hundreds of AWS Partners offered software, data and services that run on AWS. Sponsors included startup and major brands like Accenture, Deloitte, PwC, Salesforce, Cisco and Capital One — to name a few.

Two public companies in the trade show industry, Viad Corp. and Emerald, reported financial results for the third quarter that ended Sept. 30. Here's what their leaders had to say their performance:

Hervé Sedky, Emerald’s president and CEO, said, “We are very pleased with the continued double-digit growth we’re seeing in our live events business."

Steve Moster, Viad’s president and CEO, said, "At Spiro, our existing corporate clients’ spend grew over the prior year, and we continued to win new clients in the large, fragmented experiential marketing sector. GES saw a 14% increase in same-show revenue from events produced in the U.S.”

Breaking news: The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has selected trade show industry veteran Karen Chupka to succeed Chris Brown as the association’s managing director and executive vice president of global connections and events, effective Jan. 1.

After 25 years of service to the organization, Brown announced in July that he is transitioning out of NAB following the 2024 NAB Show, which is set for April 14-17 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The top challenges event planners are currently facing include higher costs (75.7%), followed by finding availability (51.3%), while timely approval from decision-makers, responsiveness, service levels/quality, contract negotiations and budget management were all closely ranked in third place, according to the Q2/Q3 Meetings & Events Pulse Survey by Global DMC Partners.

“Increasing costs in relation to budgets continues to be a primary challenge for many of our clients, as evident in the recent survey responses,” said Global DMC Partners President and CEO Catherine Chaulet. “With nearly all aspects, from airfares to F&B, increasingly getting more expensive, planners are required to be more creative with the ways they spend their budget.”
