Let’s talk drum mics! Tommy Whiteside’s “Nana’s Piano” was recorded live in the ballroom at Way Back. I had set my intention for the drum sound somewhere between Elvin Jones on “Speak No Evil” and Montez Coleman on “Earfood” (old school but hi-fi). Here’s what I ended up with:

Kick: combination of for punch: close-up in the middle of the reso head, and a -A for attack and tone: mounted off the rim and off-axis.

Snare: the classic Shure mounted just off the rim and pointed towards the center.

Overheads: the bulk of the drum sound: a coincident pair of .usa -012 small-diaphragm condensers with cardioid caps mounted in XY above the drummers head. This captured a full balance of toms and cymbals the way the drummer is hearing it!

Room: a Blumlein pair of -2N ribbon mics set up in the middle of the room captured a good balance of the whole band, as well as the beautifully balanced reflections of the old Opera house.

And that’s it! Huge open sound with minimal microphones. Of course, being tracked live, every other microphone in the room is contributing slightly to the drum sound, adding a dreamy sense of space or a phasing nightmare depending on how you look at it. I think I got close to my original intention, especially after mixing. Enjoy!
