Updates on LA firestorm: Wildfires have ravaged the Los Angeles area, including the Hollywood Hills, burning over 54 square miles and forcing around 179,000 people to evacuate, officials reported. At least five lives have been lost, thousands of structures destroyed, and more than 60,000 others remain at risk as strong winds continue to fuel the flames in densely populated parts of Southern California.

The Palisades and Eaton fires, the two largest blazes, remained completely uncontained as of Thursday afternoon, according to Cal Fire. Residents have shared accounts of devastating losses, narrow escapes, and the destruction of their homes, while photographs captured the widespread devastation.

Firefighters are battling the blazes amid hurricane-force winds, prompting forecasters to extend a red flag warning for Los Angeles and Ventura counties until 6 p.m. Friday. Winds were expected to reach 40-55 mph overnight Thursday, with isolated gusts up to 70 mph, though this is less severe than the 80-100 mph gusts seen earlier in the week.

The Palisades Fire alone has destroyed approximately 5,316 structures, including homes, businesses, RVs, and smaller buildings, according to Cal Fire’s aerial survey conducted Wednesday.

On Thursday, President Biden announced that the federal government would cover 100% of disaster response costs for the next six months. Speaking from the White House, he outlined plans to provide aid for debris removal, temporary shelters, and support for first responders. Biden also pledged federal resources, including 400 firefighters and 30 firefighting planes, to help combat the blazes. “Spare no expense,” the president said, describing the situation as “catastrophic.”

Officials have confirmed at least five deaths, but with nearly 180,000 people still under evacuation orders, the true toll remains uncertain. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna noted the challenges in obtaining accurate figures, citing the severe conditions responders are facing. “Some areas look like a bomb was dropped,” Luna said during a news conference, asking for patience as search efforts continue.
