Don't tell me we don't have power!

“The average income for African-American households nationwide is $47,290 with 35% earning $50,000 or more. With an overall aggregate household income level of $695.6 billion, African Americans continue to be viable consumers with a collective buying power estimated to reach $1.1 trillion8 by 2015.”

“The Black population and its aggregate buying power are overall more geographically and diverse than other ethnic or racial segments.”

Here are some tips for those of you who would like to start your own business, but need a little guidance.

Here are three ways to help you find a way to start a new side hustle or start-up venture.

What are you already doing for free? There’s the adage that you should do whatever it is in your heart that you would do for free. But, that advice is hard to follow when your passion is playing video games all day and you have a mortgage to pay. Instead of relying on what you would like to do, start with what you already do for free. Are you good at budgeting? Propose to teach financial management camps at freshman orientation at the local college or university. Do you have the ability to connect people easily? Become a matchmaker or create an event where people get together and meet. Don’t limit yourself to what you would like to do for free, start where you are.

Identify your idea space and spend as much time there as possible. It is true: some people’s best ideas come in the shower. For others, those game-changing ideas come while they are driving. Your best ideas could come while you are simply lying in bed. Wherever inspiration hits you most often is where you should try to be for at least an hour of your day. Be real about where that space is and get to thinking!

Find a Team. No man or woman is an island. Find the folks you can trust, and find the folks that are honest with you. Bounce ideas off of them and see what sticks. Some of the best ideas come from general conversations.

More info about starting a Non-Profit organization.

By definition, a nonprofit organization uses surplus revenues to achieve its mission, rather than distributing that money as profit or dividends. These organizations fall under IRS designation 501(c) 3 and are formed by filing bylaws and/or articles of incorporation in the state where they will operate. A mix of controlling members or boards, paid staff, management, and unpaid volunteers operate most nonprofits.

Several people have inquired about advice on starting a Non-Profit. Here are some Quick-Tips.

Do’s and Don’ts of Starting A Nonprofit

Don’t start a program on the premise of snagging some of the millions of dollars in grant money doled out by Uncle Sam every year.

Do focus on a mission you are passionate about and you can get behind 100 percent.

Don’t try to run a nonprofit out of your bedroom. In most cases you’ll need a physical location where donors, grantors, and corporations can “see” your vision in action.

Do take the time and money to set up a legal 501(c) 3 corporation.
Don’t be discouraged if the dollars aren’t there immediately, it takes time to build a reputation and credibility.

Do establish strong reporting practices and accounting systems so that you can share your organization’s progress and successes with stakeholders.

This is why our mission is important!!

African Americans earned a take-home salary of nearly $950 billion yearly (2009), not to mention the billions they generate in productivity increase and profits for their employers. Sadly, less than 5% of this income is returned to the communities where many African Americans live. Thus they are rundown, impoverished, and are easy prey for those who would exploit the weak in society.

But viewed as a nation, the African American economy would rank in the top 15 of the approximately 200 nations in the world! African Americans possess enormous potential, creativity, and compassion. These advantages must be utilized to build social, political and economic power.

Invest in marketing your business or move out of the way!

The heart of your business success lies in its marketing. Most aspects of your business depend on successful marketing. The overall marketing umbrella covers advertising, public relations, promotions and sales. Marketing is a process by which a product or service is introduced and promoted to potential customers. Without marketing, your business may offer the best products or services in your industry, but none of your potential customers would know about it. Without marketing, sales may crash and companies may have to close.

Black Entrepreneur Success Story!!!!

Angelia Kane was so sure the corporate world wasn't for her that she began freelancing right of college in 1993. She started with web design, moved into consulting and then after the Internet bubble burst, ultimately, marketing. Becoming a mom led her to want more structure in her work life, while keeping the flexibility she coveted being her own boss. She launched New York-based Bedtime CEO, which offers coaching and other services to those balancing entrepreneurship and parenthood.
