Our Cocoa Police Athletic League kids just returned from four days of learning, networking, and building their leadership skills for their future! Through our community partners like Mike Erdman Toyota and Southeast Petro Distributors, Inc. and so many others that donated funds to our Cocoa Police Foundation, we were able to send this group of kids to the State of Florida PAL Youth Directors Conference in Orlando.

A suspect arrested in 2021 for s*x crimes against a child was found guilty of more than 60 felony counts involving child po*******hy and other s*x crimes against a child. Temron Juwan McFarlane (DOB 12/29/1995) was convicted of multiple counts each of possession of child po*******hy, use of a child in a s*xual performance, promoting s*xual performance by a child, lewd or lascivious molestation, human trafficking, and interference with custody. The guilty plea and conviction carried a prison sentence of more than 300 years. Instead, the plea agreement resulted in each sentence running concurrently, totaling 12-years with credit for time served. Upon completion of his prison sentence, McFarlane will serve another 10-years of probation and be required to register as a s*x offender for the rest of his life.
On January 12th, 2021, Detectives with the Cocoa Police Department responded to the Budget Inn at 4150 W. King St., Cocoa in reference to locating a missing/runaway female juvenile from Palm Bay. Officers located the juvenile female outside the hotel. She was in the company of an older male, later identified as McFarlane. Further investigation revealed McFarlane was involved in human trafficking and exploitation of the underage girl. He was also found to be in possession of multiple images and video depicting child po*******hy. “Unfortunately, this kind of activity is more common that people realize,” said Detective Chris Zuniga. “There have been cases of children looking for attention through social media and trying to gain that attention from older adults that they shouldn’t be speaking with. Parents and guardians need to be aware of the actions of their teenagers and children.”
As a result of the convictions, McFarlane will be a registered s*x offender for life.

Good work.

CPD officers are the best!

Recently, officers with our Community Engagement Unit found a pregnant mom walking home with her two children, so they stopped to have a conversation. Cpl. Tullier and Officer Johnson learned this family had no transportation to and from school. What happened next demonstrates the heart of our mission here at CPD! The officers took it upon themselves to get a bike and a skateboard and brought it to their location. Now, the kids can make it to school faster and mom doesn’t have to walk all the way!

“We wanted to bless a random kid with a new bike and skateboard, and we happened to run into the perfect family that needed it,” said Officer Johnson. “Even though there was a language barrier, a big hug and smile was shared between the officers and the boys!!”

We love stories like this! It’s why we are

The impact of this one young life taken from us far too soon. The detectives, and officers who worked this case in 1991 were forever changed by it. Many of them have retired, or moved on to other careers, but they will always remember Junny on this day. CPD will always remember Junny Rios-Martinez Jr., 1979-1991.

Bomb Threat Investigations

Patrol officers responded to three false bomb threats at Cocoa High School in the last three weeks. These incidents disrupted school function for several hours and unnecessarily used valuable police resources to clear each call.

The latest threat was reported at 11:24 a.m. on Wednesday by an unknown caller. The Cocoa Police Department, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and the Brevard County School District responded and spent several hours making sure the school was safe. No explosive devices were located and the threat was not credible. On February 11th, a similar call was made with the same results. The investigation revealed possible connections to false threats coming from outside the State of Florida and both cases were turned over to the FBI for follow up.

Another threat was made on February 3rd by voice message which was reported the next day. The investigation revealed it to be a false report and a suspect has been identified with charges pending review by the State Attorney’s Office.

Making a false report about a bomb or explosive device or weapon of mass destruction is a 2nd degree felony in Florida. This is punishable by up to 15-years in prison if convicted.

Congratulations to Lt. Mike Dellatorre for successfully completing the University of Louisville’s Southern Police Institute’s Command Officers Development Course. Lt. Dellatorre spent the last four months studying command level instruction that included policing in the 21st century, strategic management and teambuilding, ethics and innovation, prevention and investigation of police misconduct and more. The course involved 400-hours of high-level instruction that will now be applied to his current leadership roles at the Cocoa Police Department. “I’m very proud of Lt. Dellatorre’s accomplishment and look forward to his continuing dedication to the highest level of professionalism and integrity in his service to the citizens of Cocoa,” said Chief Evander Collier IV.
