MWC Press is part of the Midwest Writing Center’s 501(c)(3) non-profit status, and all sales from MWC Press go back into our programs and toward future publishing opportunities. The MWC Press publishes three annual publications: The Atlas, a literary magazine produced by the Young Emerging Writers Internship Program; Off Channel, which includes the winners, honorable mentions and finalists of the

Mississippi Valley Poetry Contest; and the winner of the Susan K. Collins Chapbook Contest, selected by a different judge each year. We also publish the Out Loud Poetry Anthology on a rolling basis. MWC Press reserves the right to publish books, chapbooks, etc. at its discretion, or when projects that are beneficial to the MWC’s mission are brought to our attention. We are interested in publishing work that looks out beyond itself, and we seek to create a collaborative relationship with the writers we publish. Our main criteria for everything we publish are that the quality of the writing is high and the purpose/objectives of the project are clear. MWC Press does not accept unsolicited manuscripts without prior inquiry. If you feel you have a project that would work with our mission and serve our community, please query via email with a brief description of the project, its objectives, and why you think MWC would be a good home for your work. If we are interested based on your query, we will ask for a formal proposal and detailed marketing plan to be submitted for reviewed by committee; the committee will then make a recommendation to the MWC Board of Directors regarding publication.

“Literature is indispensable to the world. The world changes according to the way people see it, and if you alter, even by a millimeter, the way a person looks at reality, then you can change it.”

Way to go Shellie Moore Guy!

Why does it sound cool when two different rhythms play at the same time… and just line up? That’s the magic of 🎵POLYRHYTHM!🎵

Thanks so much to Shellie Moore Guy and Girls on Fire for teaching Madison Elementary all about polyrhythm!

Students in the AALS United Way girls mentorship program joined Shellie on stage to perform different rhythms as she read her book “How Little Billy Learned To Play” during a recent assembly, and it was a BLAST!

Special thanks to Love Girls Magazine.

Congrats to our friends at the Rock Island Public Library. Stop by to help celebrate 150 years!

Today we celebrate 150 years of library service in the city of Rock Island. Our current director, Angela Campbell, poses with a portrait of the first Rock Island Librarian, Miss Ellen Gale, as painted by Charlie White. We hope you can stop by this afternoon, anytime between 3 & 6 to celebrate with us!

2022 marks the start of our 150th year as a public library, and that’s a great reason to celebrate! The Rock Island Public Library began November 25, 1872, the first in Illinois to actually open for business after the passing of the 1872 Illinois Local Library Act.

Forty years on from the launch of Banned Books Week, censorship is once again on the rise. John Self considers the long and ignoble global history of book-banning.

A few weekends ago, I was sitting around with a group of friends and we got to talking about books we had loved when were kids.
Lots of different titles were discussed: Harriet the Spy, The Secret Garden, Anne of Green Gables, Winnie-the-Pooh, Island of the Blue Dolphins, Henry Huggins, Fantastic Mr. Fox, James and the Giant Peach.
We talked about how we had discovered the books we loved, and the phrase that got repeated again and again was “I remember my teacher reading it to the class.”
I wish those teachers could have heard us talking about books read to us more than 50 years ago, about how much we loved them and how we will never forget them.
You teachers out there (and you librarians, too): thank you for this gift you give every day.
I promise: those kids won’t forget the books. Or you.
And: thank you, Mrs. Boyette, for reading Island of the Blue Dolphins to our second grade class.
