When it gets colder and the days get shorter, trees start getting ready for winter. They stop producing the green pigment called chlorophyll, which helps them make food. As the chlorophyll fades away, other colors that were always there, like oranges and yellows, become visible. Some trees also create new pigments that turn leaves red or purple. So, those vibrant fall colors you see are actually the trees' way of preparing for the colder months ahead!
