Freezing rain showers are finally coming to an end across the area this evening as dry air mixes into the northern side of this winter system and erodes the precipitation shield. A chance of freezing rain and snow showers will continue through the remainder of this evening, with road ways remaining icy overnight tonight, even after the wintry precipitation comes to an end.
A mixture of freezing rain, sleet and perhaps some snow is surging northward out of northeastern Iowa this afternoon, and is currently tracking over Howard, Mitchell, Floyd, Mower and Fillmore counties in Minnesota. This precipitation will continue to advance northward in the coming hours, overspread Austin and the Rochester metro in about an hour or so.
With that said, expect a resurgence in icy road conditions across the area, especially on roads that have not been as heavily treated. Multiple crashes have already been reported on I-35, I-90 and US Highway 14 as of the last few hours, so it will be important to take it slow and rive cautiously if heading out this afternoon and evening.
8:30 AM Weather Update. FYI, MN/DOT now reporting ice on I-90 between Austin and Dexter as of 8:30 AM, south of Austin on 218 and 105, and from Albert Lea to Alden. A spinout has been reported on I-90 near the Bricelyn/Wells exit. Take it easy out there and give yourself plenty of time. Ice is sneaky. -Randy Brock
A mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow is making its way through northeastern Iowa and into southeastern Minnesota this morning and will continue to push north, northeast and east through the remainder of the day today as low pressure tracks across Iowa. Ice accumulations look to remain on the lower side, under 0.1", with snow accumulations anywhere from a trace, to up to 2" in areas.
Snow and ice accumulation amounts will truly hinge on temperatures near the surface and aloft. Warmer air is already making its way over the area, as far north as the Twin Cities, this morning that would promote melting of any falling snow. This increases the risk for freezing rain/sleet through the day today, and would decrease the risk for snow. This is a highly dynamic situation, and monitoring current weather and travel conditions will be key through the remainder of Saturday. Stay safe and if you have to drive, drive slowly and carefully!
