Rochester firefighters were called to a house explosion and fire in the northwest part of the city on Friday afternoon.

A man living at the house that exploded, at 250 Pullman Ave., was able get out of the building on his own and was taken to the hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported.

New York Attorney General Letitia James announced Thursday that her office would recuse itself in the investigation of a 43-year-old inmate's death after he was beaten in an Oneida County prison.

The Attorney General’s Office, which was overseeing the investigation, said its lawyers are defending four of those officers over separate matters, posing a potential conflict of interest.

By the end of 2024, there were 45 homicides in the city of Rochester. That’s 10 less than 2023, and 35 less than in 2021.

Shootings and homicides continued a decline from a surge scene in 2021 and 2022, reaching numbers comparable to the pre-pandemic era.

Longtime local attorney and nonprofit champion Justin Vigdor has died at 95.

Vigdor's nonprofit work saw him serve on numerous boards and he is considered a founder of the Al Sigl Community of Agencies, which is an umbrella organization for many agencies providing services for children and adults with disabilities.
