We are expecting even more snowfall Thursday night through Saturday. Gusty winds and light, fluffy snow blowing around will limit visibility.

Give yourself extra time if you are traveling Friday.

A WINTER STORM WATCH has been issued by the National Weather Service, valid Midnight Thursday night until 9am Saturday. There is the potential of heavy snow + strong, gusty winds. Biggest impact will be through the day Friday.

[9:57 PM] - The Winter Storm Warning has expanded further north, and all of us are under either a Winter Storm Watch, Warning, or Winter Weather Advisory. We remain in Alert Day status throughout Tuesday, and we are expected to see our highest snowfall accumulations of the 2023-2024 season. Snowfall totals could range anywhere from 2-6" by Highway-14, and have the potential to approach double digits in northern Iowa.

In addition to the snowfall, expect the snow to blow around. It won't be a blizzard though.

While winds will not be strong enough to make this snow storm become a blizzard, and they will not cause widespread whiteout conditions, it will be enough to create blowing snow.

By no means is this forecasted to be the biggest snowfall we have ever had, but it is the first time this season we are on track for multiple inches of snow.

We are expected to have our biggest snowfall event so far this Winter late Monday through early Tuesday. It is enough of a threat to garner an Alert Day.

Outside of one Winter Weather Advisory due to freezing drizzle, it's been quiet.

Both of these vary in snowfall totals depending on what state or county you live in, but they are the same in southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa.

The biggest factor for snowfall totals will be the how far north these snow bands will be able to track.

The peak of the activity will be late Monday through Tuesday morning. The heaviest of snowfall will stay to our south, where several states across the Great Plains have several counties under a Winter Storm Watch.

Before early next week, the only "chance" for snow is late Tuesday into Wednesday. Most, if not all, of these flurries will stay well northeast of us up in Wisconsin and Michigan.

As you know by now, we had the warmest December we have ever had. Temperatures being WAY above average also contributed to a lack of snowfall that we have not had in over 20 years.

We are starting 2024 much like the last few months of 2023: dry and warmer than normal.

Another warmer week than normal, another dry week. Snowfall is lacking. Our best chance the rest of this week is on Tuesday.

[7:26 PM] - Road conditions continue to get worse with several roads partially or completely covered with ice from the freezing drizzle. If you can wait to travel later on Sunday, that is advised while plow trucks work on clearing roads.

By the evening of New Year's Eve, roads should be in better shape as trucks have time to scrape ice off the roads and snowfall is over.
