In 2019 Zenaida Flores and her longtime partner, Tharmond Ligon Jr. started, @rescuenaturenow, a nonprofit dedicated to combating blight and inequities in minority communities.
A good portion of their work encompasses nature-based educational programs for youth. Including the younger community members was something they were inspired to do after noticing neighborhood kids frequenting a nearby gas station for chips, pop, and candy. Flores and Ligon brought these youth to their backyard garden and gave them collard greens with instructions to take them home to their mothers. “She’ll know what to do with them,” they told the kids. The next day, the kids returned excited about what they ate and curious about gardening.
