Happy Birthday, Daphne! Did you know that the City of Daphne was incorporated 94 years ago on July 8, 1927 with a population of only 500?
The town was officially established April 9, 1874 and named by the first postmaster's wife after the laurel tree which was also called Daphne. The tree was abundant in this area at the time. In the early 1900s several Italian families settled in Daphne and brought with them their expertise in agriculture and other areas.
The architecture of our current Daphne City Hall reflects a modern version of Italian Renaissance style. The names of streets and businesses surrounding Olde Towne Daphne give further evidence of Daphne's connection to the old world: Manci, Guarisco, Randall, Dryer, Bertagnolli, Van Iderstine, just to name a few.
The first meeting of the Town Council of Daphne was held a few months later in October with Mayor James M. Voltz and Council members Angelo A. Trione, Frank D. Rayford, Daniel P. Eddins, Horace J. Sims, and Henry H. Hanson presiding. Town resident A.J. Smith donated a check for $1.00, being the first sum of money to be paid into the Town Treasury.
Join Mayor Robin LeJeune, our City Council, and all of the employees with the City of Daphne in wishing our great city a Happy Birthday!
