I’m so excited to share this announcement with you!
After 36 years of broadcasting on WDBJ7 and visiting classrooms across the region, I now have the great fortune to combine those two passions in a more formal way.
The Communications Department at Virginia Tech is building an impressive Multimedia Journalism program and I am honored to join the staff beginning this fall. As a Professor of Practice, I can keep my hand in both professions to give the VT students the most current experience.

March 8th brings cold wind and a few passing clouds with snow showers. Looks like the WDBJ Patio will not be open for business anytime soon. Blah.

Many years ago when the Roanoke Express brought minor league hockey to town, the Reed family was hooked. Now, I'm happy to say that the Rail Yard Dawgs bring excitement back to the Berglund Center! My youngest son Dan and I had a great time with Claude Piche (not pictured because I'm slow with the phone camera) Plus no Roanoke Hockey Experience is complete without some quality time with Sammy Oakey. Big win over Knoxville.

The Virginia Tech TV studio at the Moss Fine Arts Center was FULL of nervous energy as they went on Facebook Live for the first time today. The team work was fun to watch. Good luck to these communication students.

For all of my Holiday Vacation Alaska trip friends, the weather today in Denali Park. While that bus ride up the canyon scared the living daylights out of me, this kind of weather will take a very close second. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

This is an interesting article by Dan Casey of the Roanoke Times. It seems to me there are two stories here. As Dan has pointed out in numerous articles, the Greensboro Post Office is not doing Roanoke mail service any favors. The 50 days late ballot is a prime example.

The other is how many ballots arrived late. By a day or two. I wonder if we live in such a fast Amazon world, where a click on your device gives you instant shipping feedback, that sticking the ballot in the mail on election day and expecting it to be delivered in time is the result.

In any event, the holiday season is upon us. Safe travels everyone, watch out for the deer in the road and Happy Thanksgiving.

A quick survey of Roanoke-area registrars reveals that hundreds of absentee ballots in the November election were not counted because they arrived in the mail after the Election Day deadline.

Since our first hard freeze over the weekend signaled the arrival of winter soon, I decided to chase all the bees, flies, lady bugs and stink bugs out of the fireplace and chimney :-)

My lovely bride celebrated a birthday this past weekend. Keeping with tradition, I cooked her a special meal. This one had a farm to table theme - the cabbage came out of our front field about an hour before this photo and the beef was locally sourced and corned over the last week using a recipe from America's Test Kitchen More flavorful and WAY less salty than the store bought version.

A little food for thought as we go into the winter season. This is not really about politics. I've personally seen the fatigue levels in some NWS offices but the staff is so talented and dedicated, they still get the job done at a very high level. But you can't run on the edge forever!

EMPLOYEE PICKS! “The Denali National Park Tundra Tour is one of the many incredible highlights on all of our Alaska Tours. We saw many wonderful animals and breathtaking scenery as we traveled along the winding roads and our driver provided interesting and sometimes humorous commentary about Denali National Park.” - Matt, HV Tour Consultant tinyurl.com/HV-Alaska

Final travel post about Alaska. We begin in Prince William Sound with amazing close up views of the melting glaciers. If you want to know why the ice looks blue, click here: https://www.nps.gov/glba/learn/nature/common-questions-and-myths-about-glaciers.htm
Our time in Anchorage was well spent learning stories of the indigenous families. And since fall color is beginning to show itself right now in southwest Virginia, a view of the vibrant colors of Alaska - in late August! Hope you enjoyed the pics.

Our Friday Alaska installment features all things tourist. In the land of spectacular views and wildlife, sometimes it's just fun to be a tourist. You know, go to all the dives in Juneau like the Red Dog Saloon. Head to the Yukon and pan for gold. Teresa and I collected $36 worth of gold dust and I had it made into earrings for Teresa. I know, big spender right? That's a railroad snow blower I'm posing in front of. Apparently they get a lot of snow :-)
Also Teresa, Mac and I spent a lot of time posing in front of or trying to kiss stuffed animals. Like I said, tourist stuff. Fun stuff.

Dog sledding is something my sister, Wendy Riggs knows a lot about. From her vantage point in Montana, she and her husband Steve have trained and raced teams for years. So I took these shots to give her a smile. The obligatory photo shoot with my WDBJ traveler Moe. Susan Butcher's family dog kennels. You can learn more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_Butcher
And finally our guide preparing chum salmon to be dried and later used as dog food. Fascinating look at recreation, Alaska style.

09/28/2017

Our Alaska visit on Facebook today will feature all things dog sledding. As we swung through Fairbanks there were opportunities to learn more about the Iditarod: the race, the dogs and the teams. Then for fun we got to do this!

Wildlife from Alaska for today's post. Those who have been to Denali National Park know that sightings from the road are very exciting. The first is a grizzly mom and cubs eating fall berries. The close up is from a nature preserve. The caribou were at a Indian village carefully staged for our cameras. The Dall sheep were on a mountainside in Denali. When I came back to Fincastle, the deer, turkeys, groundhogs and stink bugs just didn't compare :-)

Alaska continued - I'm not a huge fan of heights. So when our Yukon train went along narrow shear cliffs and passed by failing bridges, I did a lot of leaning in the other direction - as if that would help :-) Later in Denali park, those buses took us on a crazy, narrow road to see wildlife and Mt Denali. Again, hard lean to the right !!

Back to Alaska pictures now. The lovely Teresa Reed hanging out with me on the Volendam as we cruise the Inner Passage in late August. The view from the Eagles Nest, top deck was always a treat. And here we are arriving in Juneau for our first stop. Interesting town which can only be accessed by air or boat. No roads lead to the state capital of Alaska.
