We Belong to You!

The Electric Cooperatives of Mississippi serves as the unified voice of all electric cooperatives in Mississippi. While we do not generate or distribute power, we represent the people who do, the 25 electric power associations and one generation-and-transmission electric power association. We function as a united service organization for the mutual benefit of all electric power associations and th

eir members. The association’s staff is composed of skilled professionals who provide a wide range of specialized services to member-systems at a state level. The services are designed to assist local systems in serving their own members more effectively and economically. Among the areas of the association’s expertise are: a government relations program that monitors legislative action on the state and national levels; member relations; programs that emphasize youth involvement and leadership; safety and loss control programs; employee training programs; communications and public relations, including the publishing of Today in Mississippi (the largest circulated publication in the state) which has a circulation of 472,300; employee credit union; coordination of insurance programs; and much more. Our most important function is representing the more than 784,300 members who receive their electric service from an electric power association. In a cooperative manner, we are committed to ensuring that each member is provided quality electric service at the least possible cost. It is with this commitment that we join forces with each association in doing collectively what cannot be accomplished individually. For more information contact Ron Stewart at 1-601-605-8600.

Strength in the Cooperative Network

Storms rolled through on Saturday afternoon and evening, bringing high winds and tornadoes. Unfortunately, this storm system caused outages across our state at most of our 25 local electric cooperatives. Line workers at 19 of the electric co-ops worked through Saturday into Sunday morning to assess damage and begin making repairs.

There were numerous broken poles, which takes time to repair. As of Monday morning, six electric cooperatives are still restoring electric power to their members, receiving assistance from 12 other electric cooperatives – even one from Arkansas. There is power in the cooperative network to respond when others need assistance.

The Northcentral area fared pretty well during yesterday’s storms, but other areas of the state were not as fortunate. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those recovering from damage and loss.

These men are traveling to assist East Mississippi Electric Power Association with power restoration in Clarke and Lauderdale Counties. We also pray for them and all of the line workers across the state.

This morning, a crew of our dedicated linemen headed to Carthage, Mississippi to assist Central Electric Power Association with storm restoration and cleanup efforts after recent severe weather.

We’re proud of these men for stepping up to help restore power and bring relief to those affected. Please join us in praying for their safety, strength, and protection as they travel and work in challenging conditions.

This morning crews left to assist Southwest Electric. They sustained significant storm damage last night in that part of the state. We are always eager to assist where we can. Please keep our guys in your thoughts and prayers as they head to help others.

For our January 2025 issue, we talked to two longtime Mississippi lawmakers about public service at the state capitol in Jackson. State Sen. Dean Kirby, (R-Pearl) and State Rep. Percy Watson, (D-Hattiesburg) have been working for the public for decades. Watson has been a state representative for 45 years. Kirby is Mississippi’s longest serving Republican legislator. Kirby will mark 34 years in office this year. Both men count electric cooperative members as constituents. This new issue of Today in Mississippi will be hitting mailboxes soon.

Stay warm, but stay informed! 🔥
Space heaters can be a great way to heat a small space, but they can also heat up your energy bill! 💡 Think safety and cost savings when using space heaters.

1. Use the right-size heater for the area you’re trying to warm.
2. Turn off the heater when you leave the room.
3. Cost check! A typical space heater uses around 1,500 watts, which can add up over a month.

Stay cozy AND smart this winter! ❄️
