On the Children's Shelf by Jessica Collins Jessica Collins Photography Happy New Year everyone! I’m excited to be back after a little holiday break to talk books with you.
I love Brian Selznick books. Over the holiday break, I dove into “Big Tree.” Selznick has this magical way of using words, the blank space on pages, and illustrations to tell his story. It’s both complex in the multiple ways the story comes to life, but easier to follow the story through this unique combination he weaves.
“Big Tree” is the story of Louise and Merwin who are two Sycamore seeds. Yes, the story is told from first person seed and while that sounds strange when I write it here, it makes complete sense when you read the book. A fire spreads through the forest and the seeds are sent out into the unknown far sooner than they expected. Scared and only with each other to rely on, their story is their journey into the world, their communication with other plants of the forest, their quest to find good soil and their goal to set down roots to become trees.
I loved the way the story was told but had no idea if this is really how a seed potentially becomes a tree. Since this is not my area of expertise, I was thrilled to read the afterword titled, “The Science”, at the end of the book. Selznick explains “everything in the story you just read is based on scientific fact” and then goes on to further explain the specific parts of the book and the science behind it. I was fascinated. This is the most beautiful and brilliant way to explain “how does a seed become a tree” to a child.
Readers of all ages will love this story because it is so beautifully illustrated. When you read it, pay attention to the use of white space on the page. Selznick tells part of the story in that space. It is significant. Take time to really look at the illustrations. Aside from being beautiful, more of the story resides there too.
I highly recommend this book. To read about some other awesome Selznick books, check out my previous review =>

Ridgefield’s Department of Social Services Town of Ridgefield, CT and the Commission on Aging announce the dedication of a bench for Ridgefield seniors.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the 8-foot teak wood bench took place on January 8, 2025, in front of Marshalls, 125 Danbury Road, Ridgefield. The new addition is part of the town’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Ridgefield senior community.
“The bench is a physical reminder of how we value our Ridgefield residents who are seniors. It is also a reminder that transportation is a critical need for those of all ages, but especially for our seniors who can no longer drive themselves - whether it is to appointments, for recreation and in this case for shopping. The bench will provide a needed resting place for seniors to wait for the variety of public and volunteer transportation options to arrive and take them to their next destination. Effective transportation is an important quality of life issue we will continue to address,” said Tony Phillips, Director of Social Services. Read more =>

The Land Conservancy of Ridgefield is now accepting applications for several board positions, offering an opportunity to contribute to the preservation and stewardship of the town’s natural resources.
As an all-volunteer board, members play a vital role in conducting annual field reviews of the organization’s properties and easements. The board meets monthly on the second Thursday to discuss initiatives and responsibilities, with a shared vision of enhancing Ridgefield’s quality of life through the permanent preservation of its natural resources.
The Land Conservancy is dedicated to acquiring, conserving, and sustaining stewardship of Ridgefield’s limited land and water resources, benefiting the community and ensuring these treasures are protected for future generations. As a member of the Land Trust Alliance and the Connecticut Land Conservation Council, the organization joins fewer than 400 accredited land trusts nationwide in demonstrating excellence and a steadfast commitment to public trust and conservation.
Collaboration is key to the mission. The Land Conservancy works closely with the Ridgefield Conservation Commission, a separate town government organization, to expand and protect open space. While both entities share similar goals, the Land Conservancy operates as a private nonprofit 501(c)(3), distinct from the town-appointed Conservation Commission.
With housing and land development on the rise across Connecticut, the preservation of open space has never been more critical. The Land Conservancy encourages participation from residents, whether they’ve lived in Ridgefield for years or just arrived.
Board members with expertise in fundraising, finance, secretarial work, or a passion for outdoor preservation are particularly encouraged to apply. However, a shared commitment to safeguarding the town’s landscape is the most important qualification.
Those interested in joining the effort can contact the Land Conservancy’s president, Michael Carpenter, via the organization’s website https://landconservancyofridgefield.org/
