A REVIEW OF “Teddy and The Gipper: A Notre Dame Friendship”

Len Clark’s "Teddy and the Gipper: A Notre Dame Friendship" takes readers through the storied chronicles of the Rockne Era of Notre Dame football, seen through the eyes of Teddy, a young boy new to South Bend, and his faithful companion in his best dog pal, Snacks.

With the University of Notre Dame, Knute Rockne, George Gipp, and more serving as the backdrop, the reader joins Teddy in a delightful, emotional, and sometimes poignant journey through the pivotal phases of his life.

The narrative is rich with tidbits that ground the reader in a vivid sense of historical fiction. Clark’s prose feels as authentic as the relationship between Teddy and Snacks, reflecting his passion for the subject matter, including his beloved hometown of Portage, Indiana, which plays a vital part in the story.

Clifton Brown was the first starting Black quarterback in Notre Dame history in 1971. The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania native also backed up Tom Clements in 1972 and 1973, and scored a touchdown in the final regular season game of the eventual National Champion season in ‘73.
