Rites of passage are a huge deal. In my personal definition, they are joyous occasions. Sure, I realize that there are negative rites of passage, but I like my definition better as I choose to focus on them as a positive. I understand that they are transitional, in essence an event that changes a person’s life, and they are B-I-G!

Eighteen days into the new year, and I finally gave in. It was a bleak, rainy day. I was in dire straits. Two of the four major food groups were missing in the Kaminski household. Not to appear to be a wimp, the state of missing essentials – two items that I absolutely must have in order to survive – had been out of stock for four days, and I just couldn’t take it any longer. I had suffered as long as I could. A girl can only take so much.

Growing up I was taught that it is better to give than to receive. And Mr. Kaminski and I, in turn, taught our children to be philanthropic – to share their time, talents and gifts with others. I remember when our babies were in pre-school, and they asked to have a Christmas party. Of course, we agreed, but we also told them that they needed to do something good with their idea. We explained that many children didn’t get gifts at Christmas, and we invited their friends to a party and to bring a toy for a child in need.

Cowboys, campfire and Christmas!! You do not want to miss this year’s Campfire Christmas at The George Ranch.

I know that the calendar says it’s December. I know that my Christmas tree is up, and I know that I’m making a list and checking it twice. But if I see one more tv commercial about making sure my heater is in good working order for the winter weather, I’m going to lose it. My AC is working overtime, I haven’t even turned on my fireplace and I’m ready to cut all of the sleeves off of my Christmas sweaters. It’s a Christmas vest for me. It’s ho, ho hotter than Hades this Christmas in Texas, and I am not here for it.

It happened again. First rattle out of the box on an early morning road trip Mr. Kaminski commenced to poking the bear. We have discussed this, he and I, my penchant for no shenanigans in the early am hours. I can get to where I need to be, but there should be no further expectations from me until a more appropriate and humane hour arrives. I’ve even defined the time. It’s always 9:30ish.

I really don’t understand apathy. Now don’t get me wrong. I understand the meaning of the word – I simply don’t subscribe to it. For the life of me, I can’t think of one particular thing that I am apathetic about. I feel a certain kind of way about everything. I just do. It’s how I’m made.

Somehow in the last 30 minutes or so, baby girl has grown up. Tomorrow, in fact, she turns 26 years-old, and I can’t for the life of me figure out how that happened. I still have her crib. I still have her high chair. I still have all of her American Girl dolls, her homecoming mums and her trophies. I still have her ridiculously fabulous baby dresses. I may or may not have an issue letting go of things. Since it’s a special occasion, just let that go.

I haven’t been to New Orleans in a minute – well before Mr. Kaminski and I had babies. So, when the opportunity arose to go to the Crescent City to celebrate someone near and dear to me, I was all in. Now I was given the appropriate advice, or shall we say, warnings, on what to take and what not to take. That in and of itself made packing stressful, but I can scale back when necessary and lower my heel height as needed for pedestrian jaunts. All in all, I would say I was well-prepared.

I’ve been accused of many things in my life. It’s a lengthy list, and I choose to focus on the ones that appeal to me the most: sharp-witted, quick-tempered, the talent to accessorize in a fashion-forward manner, the gift of turning a phrase with an overt negative connotation into a positive. Guess I have to own them all, but I truly consider that last one a divine gift, and I cannot be dissuaded from that particular sentiment. Many have tried; none have succeeded.
