Letā€™s talk coffee! On this latest episode of Renoites I welcomed Sky Jones, the owner of Rising for People Coffee Co. Rising for People is a coffee importer, distributor, roaster, and cafe (located in South Reno alongside Haven on Earth Gluten Free Bakery). On top of all that, you can find Sky at multiple area farmers markets offering free tastings of her coffees.

Sky and I talked about her entrepreneurial journey from making direct connections with small farms that hand harvest their beans, to roasting and distributing single origin coffees to local roasters and cafes in the Reno area, to opening her own cafe space where she and her staff provide curated "flights" of coffee beverages.

Some of the topics included the importance of education for customers and building trust with them, the path from coffee newbie to coffee aficionado, the strategy of working with influencers to build an online presence, and the community response and support when a car recently drove right through a wall and into the cafe (donā€™t worry, nobody was hurt).

Thanks so much for listening and be sure to like, comment, share, and all that good stuff to help more people learn about the show!

Thank you Reno! When I created the Renoites podcast a few years ago it was because I loved meeting and talking to new people, especially other members of our community here in Northern Nevada, and I wanted to share those conversations with others who might enjoy or benefit from them.

Since then, it has been profoundly rewarding to have shared space together on the internet airwaves with hundreds of unique, thoughtful, caring, dedicated, creative, passionate, inspiring Renoites and Northern Nevadans. I hope that by including a wide variety of guests and approaching every conversation with curiosity and kindness, Iā€™ve created a positive and lasting record of this time in this wonderful place we call home and of the people who make it so.

Iā€™m so honored that the community has recognized the value of this project enough to vote for Renoites as the best local podcast in Northern Nevada, and Iā€™m grateful to all of the people who I couldnā€™t have done it without: my guests and listeners, friends and family, several students from UNR who aided in production, my earliest fan and biggest booster Vickie Musni, my financial supporters on patreon, anyone who wears Renoites t-shirts or puts a sticker on their water bottle or shares an episode with a friend, and all those who choose to work in the essential but difficult and often thankless world of local media. I often describe Renoites as a ā€œsoloā€ project but a community podcast canā€™t exist without a strong community.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart ā¤ļø

It's almost that time of year! Thousands of classic vehicles will descend on Northern Nevada for Hot August Nights, one of the area's longest running and most noticeable events. The main event kicks off THIS FRIDAY and continues through next week at multiple locations in Reno and Sparks.

On this episode of Renoites, I welcomed the executive director of Hot August Nights, Deny Dotson. Deny also previously worked as the tourism director for Virginia City,

We had a great conversation about what makes Hot August Nights special, how it intertwines with Reno's identity even as Reno is changing, what makes a car a classic, how different people participate in different ways, the importance of tourism to the economy of cities like Reno and Virginia City, and so much more!

Have you listened yet to the new episode of Renoites with Washoe County School Board President Beth Smith? We had a great conversation including about the toxicity, negativity, and propaganda that has been pushed into the conversation.

The good news? Actual community members don't like all that nonsense and voted accordingly! Check out this clip from the show and listen to the entire episode wherever you get podcasts!

JUST RELEASED! Education is at the forefront of our political conversations today. I got to chat with Beth Smith, president of the Washoe County School Board of Trustees, about key issues like absenteeism, school funding, for-profit charters, the superintendent selection, and the politics of the recent primary elections. Washoe County School Board President Beth Smith was featured on the CBS Evening News last night about all the attacks she and others have received during increasingly toxic political campaigns of recent years. Thankfully, we've seen from the recent elections that voters don't reward bullying, as most of the candidates using that strategy were soundly defeated at the ballot box.

Keep an eye on your podcast feed (and be sure to subscribe wherever you listen) because Beth joined me recently to record an episode of Renoites where we talked about all this and much more!

Well this is a huge bummer

Thank you.

For the past 39 years, Sundance Books and Music has had the honor and pleasure of being part of the Truckee Meadows community.

We began our adventure, as most small businesses do, with the recognition of opportunity. In our case, that potential was the very human need for stories. Stories of fact and fiction, of poetics and possibility, of wisdom and wild wonder, stories that feed the soul and prompt conversation. And a friendly, welcoming home for those stories and those who might seek them. Thus, Sundance came to be, a proudly independent bookstore that dared to believe in its ability to nurture a more objective, curious, connected, and joyful community.

And believe us when we say we could never have fulfilled this mission without YOU!

But, as George Harrison once sang, ā€œall things must pass.ā€ Time goes by, life calls, new challenges beckon, reflection yields new answers. And in this present moment, we recognize that while endings are indeed hard to write, now is, in fact, the ideal time for us to do just that. To turn the page, to conclude our story, to close the book, and, yes, our doors. Thatā€™s why, on May 31 at 6pm, Sundance will cease business operations for good.

Weā€™re grateful to our dear neighbors and family members at Nevada Museum of Art, whoā€™ve shared the Levy Mansion with us these past 13 years, itā€™s been an amazing home and magical space for sharing books and music.

Itā€™s our profound hope that other idealistic souls will recognize the importance of independent bookselling here in the Truckee Meadows and will pick up the baton, taking us all somewhere wondrous and new.

In the days ahead, thereā€™s much housekeeping to be done ā€“ and a closing celebration to be planned ā€“ but for now, please accept our everlasting gratitude for your kinship, support, and the esteemed privilege of serving your imagination for these many years. Together, weā€™ve crafted a legacy through Sundance Books and Music.

May it endure in your heart and continue to inspire you.

ā€“Your Sundance Family
