This year I curated an hour of Black poets' legendary, but underexposed, work from 1989- through 2000's. Do you know the longest poem released as a song sung by a 500-member children's Choir? Have you heard "I've Known Rivers", or seen it performed? Did you know Gwendolyn Brooks became the 1st African American to win a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1050?..you'll hear it. How many dramatic spoken word performances do you recall between The Harlem Renaissance, or today's cafes and online hangouts. Let me know if your heart and soul soar when recalling the words and tempo of this selection of historical ways Black poets collaborated with musicians in every genre to nurture and build, courage, creativity, economic strength, love, and unity. It was first aired on my CJSF FM radio show, SuLuAu, but you can hear it now at this link https://www.cjsf.ca/contents/sistaC-April-Poetry-Mixtape

This morning I'm ending an "old" disappointment with my junior and senior high school English classes in Kansas whose poetry "weeks" were devoid of any works by Black poets.. Do you know the longest, most affirmative poem, written by two African-American brothers in one year and then composed and performed by a 500-child choir the next? On my 10 am Pacific show today we're journeying across 50 years, sharing powerful ways Black poets have connected with musicians to heal, enlighten, culturally brighten, and accelerate human rights globally. All day thinking of my "Baby Brother" Leslie Duwayne Burleson and how he must be celebrating his 1st yr being in his heavenly home.(02/03/23) He fought the good fight, while in this realm, drawing together a team to feed 50 or more people a full, warm meal three times a week from the years he was well until the past few ones when he was ailing. I am inspired by his braveness to record and broadcast from his phone the times homeless "encampments" were being broken up right after community agencies had provided them with blankets and tents. For having "the nerve" to call on Kansas City (Super Bowl City) sports figures and leaders to not only create a sports empire/franchise but create some winning solutions to the housing crisis there. Thank you for the ways you continued "Daddy Verne's" proactive steps; and pray to reflect some of them in how I live and interact with others. I am thankful that love travels across the veil. Thank you to every friend and relative who still continues to share positive energy and sentiments to .
