**Stormy Weather Update** - Thanks to Redding Fire Department, here's a great reminder of what to do, look for & avoid when stormy weather hits the North State. With recent burn scars, this type of weather may bring floods and run-off, even flash floods. Sandbags are available at Fire Stations at the following locations:
Palo Cedro,
Bella Vista
French Gulch
Shingletown
Homestake Rd. - West of Redding
Burney - Sheriff's substation
Anderson - Barney St.
**Redding & Shasta Lake do not provide bags**
Redding - North of Big League Dreams on Viking Way & Fire Station on South Bonneyview.
Shasta Lake - Corner of Ashby Rd. & Flower St.
As the Redding area anticipates its first big storm of the season, here are some reminders for staying safe in wet weather conditions:
🌧Always monitor your local weather conditions - including road closures.
🌧Remember: 6 inches of water can knock you down and 2 feet of water can sweep your car away. Don’t risk driving through a pool of water, even if it looks still.
🌧Know which areas are prone to ponding and flooding. Melting snow and additional rainfall increases the risk.
🌧Burn scars are more prone to flooding and debris flow. Navigate any areas that have recently burned with additional caution.
🌧The same fire mitigation efforts that can protect your home from danger during fire season can help keep you safe during winter weather. Keep your home free of brush and other debris at all times.
🌧Keep sandbags handy, especially in areas that are prone to flooding. Sand for sandbags is available in the vacant lot north of the Redding Sports Park (formerly Big League Dreams) at 20155 Viking Way, or at Fire Station #4, at 2605 South Bonnyview Road. You will need to bring your own sandbags and a shovel to fill them with. Find a list of locations to obtain sandbags at https://www.cityofredding.gov/government/departments/public_works/sandbags.php.
🌧Need to report flooding or a plugged storm drain? Report it online at https://redding.rja.revize.com/forms/6814 or call the 24-hour hotline at 530.224.6068.
🌧Keep your phone charged and have a charger you can use in your vehicle.
🌧Before you get on the road, let a family member or friend know when you are leaving and where you are headed.
🌧Make sure your windshield wipers are in working order.
🌧Have an evacuation plan that includes at least two escape routes.
🌧If you need to evacuate, remember to turn off all appliances and unplug electronics before you leave to reduce the risk of fire.
Don’t forget to bring extra warm clothing, blankets, and important paperwork with you.
🌧Keep your go bag stocked and ready all year long - no matter the season. Have a family member check the bags to make sure they have what you need based on the time of year. 🌧It is best to stay home during a winter storm. If you need to travel, take note of any chain requirements from Caltrans District 2. Have chains on hand for any mountain travel.
🌧Drive according to the weather conditions. In inclement weather, slow down, even if it means going below the posted speed limit.
🌧Remember that roads may be icy in storms like this one. If you encounter ice on the road, only take one action at a time. First, take your foot off the gas. With a firm grip on the steering wheel, steer as straight as possible. Then, gently put your foot on the brake.
🌧Areas that don’t get very much sunlight are more prone to freezing. Be aware that you may encounter black ice in these areas.
