Lakeshore News

Lakeshore News Hometown news throughout Wayne, Cayuga and Oswego counties

Lakeshore News serves up hometown news to the communities along the southern shore of Lake Ontario, from Wayne County in the west, through northern Cayuga County and into southwestern Oswego County to the east. The Lakeshore News is published and distributed weekly on Wednesdays to over 100 locations throughout the region.

05/08/2024

Here’s a reminder that with the board and budget votes coming up, the May 15 Lakeshore News will be your last chance to submit a letter to the editor if you are a candidate for one of our local school boards or if you are endorsing a candidate. These letters are, par for the course, 500 words or fewer. We would appreciate a letter in before 10 a.m. on Monday, May 13. You can drop one off in person at our Red Creek office or email one to [email protected].

04/29/2024

It’s been a full week since the school board candidate petition deadline expired. With that said, if you are a school board candidate seeking support from the community, feel free to send a letter to the editor by dropping one off at our 6784 Main St., Red Creek office or emailing [email protected]! You can also share a letter to the editor if you are a community member supporting a candidate. However, we will only accept letters for the May 8 issue and May 15 issue.

03/05/2024

Well, with the elections coming up in the Villages of Fair Haven and Wolcott on March 19, the March 13 issue will be your last chance to submit a letter to the editor! If you are a candidate running in Wolcott or Fair Haven, or if you support a candidate running in either village, you can drop off your letter in person at our office, located at 6784 Main St., Red Creek, or email it to [email protected]!

02/13/2024

In four short weeks, residents of the Village of Wolcott will have the opportunity to go to the polls and vote on the most important issue in the history of the village: “Shall the Village of Wolcott be dissolved?” No matter how you plan to vote on March 12, we at Lakeshore News would welcome any letters to the editor you want to send. Typically, these letters are 500 words or less. You can make the short drive to Red Creek to drop off your letter or email [email protected] with your letter. And, of course, after the dissolution vote is over, you are still welcome to send letters to the editor.

10/25/2023

The leaves changing color isn’t the only peak season happening in Wayne, Cayuga, and Oswego Counties. In just under two weeks, it’ll also be a peak season for local elections. If you are looking to write a letter to the editor in support of a candidate or if you happen to be a candidate yourself looking for support, the Nov. 1, 2023 issue of Lakeshore News is your last chance to send a letter to the editor. You can email your letters to [email protected] or you can drop them off at the Wayuga office located at 6784 Main St., Red Creek. The Nov. 1 issue of Lakeshore News is also your last chance to put an ad for candidates, so if you want your ad to run in the Lakeshore News’s, feel free to email [email protected] or make a call to 315-754-6229!

06/19/2023

We are no longer accepting letters to the editor or advertisements in support of a candidate in the local primaries. However, after the primary we will gladly accept letters to the editor or advertisements thanking people for their support.

06/15/2023

Pretty soon we will be printing the June 21 issue, meaning that this will absolutely be your last chance to send a letter to the editor endorsing a candidate for the primaries to come on June 27. If you are endorsing a candidate or if you are a candidate yourself, we would need a letter to the editor by Monday, June 19. It’s also your last chance to send an ad to [email protected], so shoot one over before Monday. Thanks!

04/18/2023

Well, it’s that time of the year! School board elections are coming right up. If you are running for school board or would like to endorse a board candidate, feel free to send your letter to [email protected]!

Shortly after our February 24, 2021 issue went to press with a story about the cancellation of Wayne County's Feb. 20 2nd dose vaccine clinic, we received an update from Wayne County Public Health regarding that clinic's rescheduling. See the official release below:

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE

2/23/2021

LYONS, NY – Wayne County Public Health would like to inform those who were registered for the 2nd Dose COVID-19 Vaccination Clinic on Saturday, February 20th at The Health Services Building in Lyons, that their appointments have been rescheduled and will occur on February 27th, from 9am to 2pm, at The Health Services Building at 1519 Nye Rd, Lyons NY.

All persons who had previously been scheduled for the Feb. 20th clinic DO NOT need to reregister for the Feb 27th clinic. Our office has been reaching out to all persons previously scheduled to notify them of this change. The appointment time from the Feb. 20th clinic will be the same appointment time you use to attend the Feb 27th clinic. Please bring your registration ticket for the Feb 20th clinic with you on Saturday Feb. 27th.

As always, the highest standard of care goes into the planning of these events, including having to adjust our clinics due to factors that are out of our control. We do appreciate the patience that individuals have shown us while we worked tirelessly to get their 2nd dose rescheduled as quickly as possible.

Wayne County Public Health would also like to inform individuals who are scheduled for the February 25th 2nd Dose Clinic that their appointments are still happening as planned. No other adjustments to our clinic schedules have been necessary at this time.

Wolcott Village Police Officer in Charge Powell’s Status Remains Unknown

Dan Durocher

Note: The following is an updated version of the story on Powell’s status printed in the Jan. 27, 2021 edition of Lakeshore News out on stands now. For the full story, pick up your copy or call 315-754-6229 to subscribe today!

Wolcott Village Police Department Officer in Charge Zackery Powell remained on the Village of Wolcott’s payroll through Jan. 19, 2021, despite a Dec. 30, 2020 indictment charging him with r**e and criminal s*x act.
However, his employment status since Jan. 19 is unknown at this time, and Wolcott Village Clerk Fran Acker did not respond to questions regarding Powell’s status after Jan. 19.

Little Response from Village
Since being indicted on charges of first- and third-degree r**e and first- and third-degree criminal s*x act, Lakeshore News has been attempting to find out Powell’s status with the Wolcott Village Police Department.
Wolcott Mayor Chris Henner, in a Jan. 25 telephone interview, would tell Lakeshore News only the following: “The village has no comment at this time.”
Wolcott Deputy Mayor Dan Smith, who also serves as Wolcott Village Police Commissioner and as the Town of Wolcott’s representative on the Wayne County Police Reform committee, has not responded to Lakeshore News about Powell’s status.
Wolcott Village Trustee Andrew “Bob” Marshall, who is also Wolcott Village Deputy Police Commissioner, had little to say about Powell’s employment status.
Marshall’s most recent response, made in a Jan. 24 telephone interview, was very simply this: “I don’t know.”

Given the lack of communication from the village, Lakeshore News has filed three Freedom of Information Act requests.
* Jan. 14: Lakeshore News submitted its first of the Freedom of Information Act requests, seeking information about Powell’s employment status as of Jan. 14, 2021. Specifically, Lakeshore News sought information regarding whether Powell was still on Wolcott village payroll or if he had been dismissed. The Jan. 14 Freedom of Information Act yielded a payroll document showing Powell on the payroll from Jan. 13 to Jan. 19, 2021, which was emailed to Lakeshore News on Jan. 26.
* Jan. 15: Lakeshore News submitted a second Freedom of Information Act request, seeking information about the hiring practices in place at the time the Wolcott Village Board of Trustees hired Powell in July 2019, as well as other village protocols outlining hiring practices. Acker did not share any documentation. In a Jan. 26 email, Acker said the newspaper had “not reasonably described records sought.”
* Jan. 28: Lakeshore News submitted its third, and most recent, Freedom of Information Act request seeking information about whether Powell is still performing his duties as officer in charge or if he has been placed on paid administrative leave after Jan. 19, 2021, the final work day on the village payroll document provided.

Lakeshore News will continue to update its readers on Powell’s status.

Powell’s Three Indictments
Powell’s most recent indictment, issued on Dec. 30, 2020, charged him with first- and third-degree r**e and first- and third-degree criminal s*x act.
The Wayne County Court indictment accuses Powell, who was a member of the Wayne County Office of the Sheriff at the time, of engaging in s*xual in*******se with a physically helpless woman on Nov. 4, 2017 in the Village of Newark.
In addition to the r**e and criminal s*x act indictment, Powell was indicted on two separate occasions during the month of September 2020. One indictment charged Powell with assault in the third degree, while the other charged him with criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal contempt in the second degree.
The assault indictment stems from an August 2019 incident in which Powell, who was Wolcott’s officer in charge at that time, was assisting Wayne County Deputy Sheriffs with a traffic stop on Pinewood Drive in the Village of Wolcott.
During the traffic stop, a woman named Megan Jock was standing outside her vehicle. Powell then attempted to initiate an arrest on Jock, charging her with resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration. Powell, during the arrest, struck Jock repeatedly, Wayne County Assistant District Attorney Scott Kadien, the lead prosecutor in all cases against Powell, has said.
Kadien has also said that the criminal contempt and criminal weapon possession charges stem from an incident that occurred after the assault indictment.
“An order of protection was issued against Powell that prohibited him from possessing firearms,” Kadien has told Lakeshore News. “It is alleged that the day the order was issued, he violated that order by possessing a firearm at the Wolcott Police Department.”
