When I first started my journey, I had no idea if I would be able to even make money doing what I love. I just knew I wanted to try giving something back to the community I've been a part of since I was a wee lad. I.e. the readers of fantasy and other books. While I don't make a killing, I can now say confidently that I make a living off of the work I do and I wouldn't have it any other way!

For those that already read it, this is a release of my first article on voice acting, adapted for the new host site. For those that haven't, the article talks about the skills and priorities I think new narrators should have when looking into joining the community.

One of the things that got in my way when I first got started was not knowing what tech I needed. I mean, you need a mic, but how should it connect to the computer? And once you've hooked it up, what program should you use to record it? And where do headphones or speakers come in?

While tech certainly isn't where you should be starting when it comes to audiobook work, you'll need to make the investment eventually. In this article, we talk about the tech you need to get started.

In my early days in VO, I would listen to pros' audio and then do a bit of master-copy (listen to the master, copy the techniques and try to figure out how they did it). Obviously I didn't have the years of experience, so the acting not being as good made sense.

What was more frustrating was having no idea why my audio quality was nowhere near theirs. Back then, I attributed it to not having thousands of dollars of acoustic treatment on my walls. While that can help, there are certainly cheaper alternatives that will allow you to get a pro sound.
