Sallie Bingham will receive $1,000 and possible publication in The Thomas Wolfe Review.

Final judge Judy Goldman said of Bingham’s entry, “Such a clear, confident voice in this story! The author goes from start to finish with that rough-hewn, straightforward, unadorned, intimate style. I was hooked the minute I read about that darned chandelier all the way through to the very last word. And now, days after reading the story for the first time, then the second time, I’m still thinking about it, wondering how those very real characters are doing.”

Goldman also selected “Aimee” by NCWN member Diane McPhail for honorable mention.

“The author is a writer of great skill and precision.” Goldman said of McPhail’s entry. “So many soul-stirring passages here. Passages that break your heart and then pat you on the arm to say everything’s going to be all right. The love contained in these pages is extraordinary.”

New comic for the NY Times Book Review! The Two Types of Stories: Expanded Edition

03/30/2023

Tennessee is my neighbor, those were everybody’s children, everybody’s teachers. I will keep posting this, every time. (How I despise those words, “every time.”)

I grew up among people with guns. Most households in my community keep hunting rifles and other fi****ms, safely stored. Rural life sometimes calls for their use; I’ve been there. I have never seen a situation that could be improved by an AR-15.

Conservative friends and legislators, we have the brains to tell a handsaw from a hand gr***de. Good laws could permit guns that are useful tools, while keeping civilians away from those made solely for human massacre. Pride of possession comes at a price. I can’t stand for one more child to pay it.

New comic for the NY Times Book Review! Life Stories

01/31/2023

The way you look at things is not simply a private matter. Your outlook actually and concretely affects what goes on. When you give in to helplessness, you collude with despair and add to it. When you take back your power and choose to see the possibilities for healing and transformation, your creativity awakens and flows to become an active force of renewal and encouragement in the world. In this way, even in your own hidden life, you can become a powerful agent of transformation in a broken, darkened world. There is a huge force field that opens when intention focuses and directs itself toward transformation.

There’s a lot to capturing the story. It’s good to see younger minds working on it. And kudos to Sam on his recovery and wisdom lessons.

A bestselling author tweeted to me over the summer and asked how she could get in touch. Intriguing, to say the least. We eventually connected via email. “My son Sam, who was on the cover of the [Pacific] Sun with me 32 years ago, grew up to be a Drake High School druggie, losing a […]

Philip Gerard, Teacher & Friend

The news of Philip Gerard’s death was the kind of shock that tempts you to think it can’t possibly be true. His vitality was of a kind that seemed irreducible and essential.

Philip was indeed essential to North Carolina’s literary community, playing so many fundamental roles for so long that it became hard to remember he hadn’t always been here. Born and educated in Delaware, he came to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and founded the MFA in Creative Writing program there. His novel Cape Fear Rising was one of the first attempts to reveal the truth of the 1898 Wilmington coup, for which he faced considerable backlash in his adopted state and city.

He kept on serving that city and state, though, and kept on writing. He became a regular contributor to Our State, published 14 books of fiction and nonfiction, wrote television documentaries and radio essays and dramas, and in 2019 received the North Carolina Award for Literature.

And yes, he was going to teach at the Network’s 2022 Fall Conference next week.

“Writing,” Philip once wrote, “uses all of you—everything you have learned, all your patience, your sense of humor, your beliefs, your imagination, your sense of composition, and ultimately your entire character. Thus it is deeply rewarding, and it never runs out.”

Very soon we will need to figure out how we’re going to deal with his absence—emotionally as well as practically.

For now, though, we are only going to mourn our friend and teacher, a writer and a human we have so long admired.
