Damascus Road Holds 15th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Day Rally

Oshkosh, WI- Saturday, January 11th, volunteers from Damascus Road, in partnership with the Oshkosh Police Department, will be gathering at Opera House Square from 11am-1pm to hold signs for the 15th annual “Stop the Traffick: Make Some Noise Human Trafficking Awareness Day Rally.” A Community Awareness 101 Training will also be offered at the Damascus Road office located at 1528 Oregon St, prior to the rally from 9:00-10:30am. January is known as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month.

Human trafficking is a crime that knows no borders, affecting individuals in every country, community, and socio-economic background. According to the International Labor Organization, there are an estimated 25 million victims of human trafficking worldwide and the crime generates $150.2 billion in illegal profits each year. Victims are often identified by various vulnerabilities. They are often manipulated through promises of love, food, shelter, fear, fame, a sense of belonging or employment then coerced or forced into manual labor, prostitution, or sexual exploitation. Children are especially targeted by traffickers via social media, mobile devices, and interactive gaming which provide venues to host anonymous conversations.

The purpose of the rally is to bring attention and to empower our community to combat this pervasive issue. Knowledge and resources are the keys to equipping the community to prevent human trafficking and support victims. Damascus Road offers free monthly community awareness trainings including prevention tips as well as other opportunities to support local survivors.

This event is free and open to the public, and all are invited to show their support. Donations to Damascus Road will also be accepted on the day of the rally, with funds supporting the organization’s outreach, advocacy, and victim support programs.

Damascus Road began in 2009 and is dedicated to raising awareness and assisting victims of human trafficking in the Fox Valley and throughout Wisconsin by presenting prevention education in schools and community groups, partnering with OPD to uncover victims, and provide aftercare resources. Since 2017, Damascus Road has assisted over 700 victims of Human Trafficking or Commercial Sexual Exploitation.
