It won't be done by screaming at each other IN ALL CAPS on Facebook or Twitter. We need to be able to look each other in the eye, acknowledge each other's humanity and right to differing points of view and be able to not let that break us apart as a society. America is unique in that we are one of the most diverse countries on the planet in culture, in ancestry and in intellectual backgrounds. Lets use our differences as a beacon of the possible and not a wedge of divisiveness. Rhetor raises the level of debate by developing a platform to consume, discuss and debate the news. We contribute to the conversation through our podcast, interview and events across the country providing people from different perspectives to come together and talk about the issues.

Since 2004, more than 2,000 American newspapers have stopped their presses and closed their doors, as noted by Margaret Sullivan in Ghosting the News. If we don’t take effective action, this trend will continue, to the detriment of the American people.

We have a strong solution in a time that the evolution to digital is creating unique and novel challenges for the journalism industry.

A Salon report cited a UNC study stating, “the United States has lost nearly 1,800 local newspapers since 2004”. This is a global issue as well. A Washington Post piece by Douglas McLennan states, “Britain has nearly 200 fewer regional newspapers than in 2005”.

A lack of local news coverage will lead to entire regions stateside and globally being without media attention specific and unique to their needs. Without an adequate flow of information, people are unable to responsibly be informed at the ballot box, know about current events in their area or be informed on issues affecting their community. Larger news outlets also draw on vital facts and figures from local news reports to tell national stories in the proper context. Losing local reporters from this journalism network would deal a crushing blow to the quality of news we all consume.

Rhetor News will change this dialogue by compensating freelance journalists for providing credible news to local communities.

No major religion has come out in opposition to the COVID vaccines. Jehovah's Witnesses, Christian Scientists, and the Catholic Church have all issued statements saying their religion does not prohibit members from getting it.

As religious exemptions are now being sought in droves, their use raises concerns that they pose a serious public health risk. But some say vaccine mandates are too much, too soon.

A Texas OB-GYN recently had to tell a woman that her fetus had anencephaly — a condition where the baby doesn't have a brain. It's always fatal, and patients are typically given the option to terminate.

Except now the state's law prohibits it.

The law bans nearly all abortions, and doctors providing pregnancy care are hoping for more clarity soon, as legal challenges continue.

"For many fully vaccinated Americans, the Delta surge spoiled what should’ve been a glorious summer," writes the physician Craig Spencer. "Those who had cast their masks aside months ago were asked to dust them off. Many are still taking no chances. Some have even returned to all the same precautions they took before getting their shots, including avoiding the company of other fully vaccinated people.

Among this last group, a common refrain I’ve heard to justify their renewed vigilance is that 'vaccinated people are just as likely to spread the coronavirus.' This misunderstanding, born out of confusing statements from public-health authorities and misleading media headlines, is a shame. It is resulting in unnecessary fear among vaccinated people, all the while undermining the public’s understanding of the importance—and effectiveness—of getting vaccinated. So let me make one thing clear: Vaccinated people are not as likely to spread the coronavirus as the unvaccinated. Even in the United States, where more than half of the population is fully vaccinated, the unvaccinated are responsible for the overwhelming majority of transmission."

This has become a common refrain among the cautious—and it’s wrong.

The new chief chaplain at Harvard University, which was founded to instruct clergymen early in the colonial period, is an atheist — and that’s fine by those who unanimously selected him for the role. Greg Epstein, the 44-year-old author of “Good Without God: What a Billion Nonreligious People Do Believe,” assumes his new position this week. He formerly served as the university’s humanist chaplain since 2005.

“There is a rising group of people who no longer identify with any religious tradition but still experience a real need for conversation and support around what it means to be a good human and live an ethical life."

Rhetor is raising the level of debate by developing a social media news platform to consume, discuss and debate the news. We will provided original content as a media company in our own right and host events throughout the country that gives us an opportunity to “meet in the middle”. America has always been an exercise in generations meeting the moment of their calling. We have always been about progressing toward a more perfect union. There are plenty of challenges in the digital age, but we are better equipped to tackle them if we work together. Lets reject the hyper-partisan divide and growing bias in our media by allowing space for each other’s perspectives. Rhetor is committed to that mission.
