I went clubbing this morning!

07/25/2023

I came up with the idea that, since I have a lathe, maybe I could turn spoon blanks faster than to just carve them.

The idea was to take a length of wood, turn it round, split it in half, glue it back together, turn them to roughly club shape, then soak them in boiling soapy water to split it back into a pair of spoon blanks.

It took maybe 3-4 hours to turn seasoned black walnut. About 1 hour or so to turn it from a half log to round, then split & glued (maybe 45 minutes for two such split & glued), turned for another hour or so, then made a pattern and finished turning it this morning.

Today was a bad air day and I didn't realize it so I had to drink half a can of caffeinated soda and still it took 5 hours to recover. Then I dragged it back inside. Next time I will try to get more video on this

An interesting article analyzing plow horses versus oxen.

Speed is not everything, as cost of upkeep matters

Up until late medieval times, the ox is preferred to the horse on farms mostly because the animal is cheaper to own and maintain even though the horse is capable of performing and helping with a greater variety of tasks beyond helping to plow fields, and these other functions of the horse include ha...
